Currently when you import a midi file, you have very limited options.
For type 0, MIDI is imported as one clip even though the clip may contain up to 16 tracks on separate MIDI channels. Currently there is no way for Ableton to separate this data and you need a separate program to do the work (I think Ableton used to be able to do this prior to v9?) We need to be able to choose three options for these:
1. Import as single clip (currently the only option)
2. Import each channel data as separate clips
3. Choose which channel from the MIDI file to import
4. Combine desired channels to a single clip
For Midi Type 1, Ableton does separate the track data, but the only option is to import every track separately all at once. This often results in more MIDI files than you may need for the project you are working on. It would be good to be able to have these options for MIDI type 1:
1. Import as single clip (Currently NOT an option)
2. Import each channel data as separate clips
3. Choose which channel from the MIDI file to import
4. Combine desired channels to a single clip
Prior to Ableton 9 MIDI files were viewed as folders that could be expanded to reveal their tracks, of which you could choose which track you wanted to import. It was super dope. Lets bring that functionality back along with the option to combine tracks to single clips if need be.
