audio to midi? or audio as a controller?

Hi!

I've called Ableton and I've been told that what I want to do is not how their audio to midi feature works, and they suggested I should build something with Max, or see if somebody did it already.

My goal is to use my voice as a controller for instruments.
1) I sing on a mic, and the program is able to recognise pitch, velocity, duration, volume etc, and convert it in real time in triggers to control a synth, or a drum.
The real time wish is not for critical Live performances, but just for the workflow commodity of using my voice like if it was a midi keyboard. That's because I am not that good with keyboard. And also because anyway what I create with my voice is never even remotely similar to what comes out when I improvise on the keyboard.
2) in case that real time is impossible, I'd be ok with recording my voice in an audio track, and let the program analyse the audio and convert it in something which can be used to trigger an instrument (I had midi in my mind, but I was suggested that with Max it can be done differently).

Are you aware of anything already available in max to do this?
Midi or not?
Or do you see it as realistic?
And I mean realistic, because there is an aura of "max can virtually do anything, even pizza", but that's, well, I call realistic something else.

Live can do "2)" just fine.

"1)" is possible, there are at least 2 M4L devices that do pitch-tracking, one is Pitch Tracker in the Max 7 Pitch and Time Machines Pack, another is --Helmholtz by Delta Sound Labs.
