DJ cue help please

Post by SideshowTom » Tue Apr 28, 2020 8:44 pm

Hello fellow musicians!

First post.

I am running Ableton 10 standard and one of the functions I like to use the software for is DJing. I have a Lexicon Alpha sound card which I was hoping would support multiple outputs, but it doesn't, so I cant use the headphone jack to listen to cue. I do have a second usb soundcard for headphone/mic, and Ableton registers both, but I can only chose one or the other in Audio output preferences. Is there a way to get both in the outputs, or better still a way to get the Lexicon Alpha to support the two outputs? (I've emailed Lexicon to see if they can offer any support.)

I have looked online, watched some videos on ASIO, and read some posts on here and I'm a bit lost. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance :)

The ASIO specification generally only allows Windows or Windows applications to use one ASIO driver at a time. Blame Steinberg for that, they came up with ASIO.

There are exceptions, but they are where the interface manufacturer has written a driver that allows you to build a composite interface out of more than one physical interface. Which means you need two interfaces from the same manufacturer which have such an ASIO driver. RME being one such manufacturer.

Alternatively, ASIO4ALL might be able to do what you want, or maybe WASAPI if Live and the interface(s) support WASAPI.

Or get a Mac - Core Audio, the Mac’s audio subsystem, has the ability to create composite interfaces built into it and the DAW then sees the composite as a single interface.
Live 10 Suite, 2020 27" iMac, 3.6 GHz i9, MacOS Catalina, RME UFX, assorted synths, guitars and stuff.

Does not look like it, it only has two outputs.

Lexicon said the Alpha can't do it. I've ordered a M-Audio Air/8. It has everything I need (overkill in some areas) but importantly a switch to select the headphone from 1/2 and 3/4, so can cue and listen to main. Couldn't see that facility on any other interface at that price range.

Thanks for your help everyone. :)
