Best setup for playing VST instruments with many keyboards (dynamic split/layer)

Post by kenny89 » Fri May 08, 2020 2:49 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Ableton Live and I'm trying to compose my setup to play on stage with all virtual instruments in a Live Set divided into MIDI tracks (one per "category" of sound, with Instrument Rack and chains to select the detailed preset).
Also, I'd like to use two MIDI keyboards and play different sounds with each of them, depending on the song I'm playing.

Example of "instrument" tracks:

Track 1 "Acoustic Piano"
--Instrument Rack
----Chain 1
------VST: "Grand Piano"
----Chain 2
------VST: "Upright Piano"
--FX

Track 2 "Organ"
--Instrument Rack
----Chain 1
------VST: "Transistor"
----Chain 2
------VST: "B3"
--FX

Track 3 "Synth"
--Instrument Rack
----Chain 1
------VST: "Pad"
----Chain 2
------VST: "Lead"
--FX

Live scenario example:

Song 1:
-- Keyboard 1 plays: "Grand Piano" (Track 1 -> Instrument Rack -> Chain 1 "Grand Piano")
-- Keyboard 2 plays: "Pad" (Track 3 -> Instrument Rack -> Chain 1 "Pad")

Song 2:
-- Keyboard 1 plays: "Transistor" (Track 2 -> Instrument Rack -> Chain 1 "Transistor")
-- Keyboard 2 plays [split]:
---- Upper part: "Upright Piano" (Track 1 -> Instrument Rack -> Chain 2 "Upright")
---- Lower part: "Lead" (Track 3 -> Instrument Rack -> Chain 2 "Lead")

Now, the preset changing should be easy to obtain seamlessly (and light for CPU and RAM) by using Kapture or ClyphX's snap functions. What I really don't know how to do is changing MIDI routing and split/layer dynamically (changes that should be automated by just pressing a button between songs).

In my mind, the perfect solution would be adding two other MIDI tracks ("Keyboard 1" and "Keyboard 2") like these:

Track 4 "Keyboard A":
--Instrument Rack
----Chain 1: MIDI to Track 1
----Chain 2: MIDI to Track 2
----Chain 3: MIDI to Track 3

Track 5 "Keyboard B":
--Instrument Rack
----Chain 1: MIDI to Track 1
----Chain 2: MIDI to Track 2
----Chain 3: MIDI to Track 3

... but I think it's not possible.

Any suggestions?
Thanks! :D
