Group tracks in Ableton

How does the grouping option in Ableton exactly work? It seems that when I increase the volume on the grouped tracks track it increases it less than if I would increase it on the separate tracks by the same number of dBs. Do the grouped tracks get increased differently in volume compared to the individual one, or does it only seem like that?
