over dubbing into arrangment from session.

Well I thought I was a somewhat advanced user. I cant figure this one out.

I usually make everything in session view. I'll set up a bunch of scenes and clips, and DJ my way through it to get a song recorded into the arrangement.
I would like to be able to easily overdub changes after a project is layed down in the arrangement.

Lets say I record 8 bars of clip launching and scene launching, from session to arrangement;
I would like to loop that 8 bars, and overdub changes.
Lets say I have hi hats recorded for the whole 8 bars, but I want drop the hats in the 4-6 bars, leaving the rest of the hat track in place.
Basically I want to be able to "dj" changes to my 8 bar arrangement loop by playing session page.
I want to do this live, while looping, and improv style. I dont think the punch in/out function will help me, given I dont know exactly what and where
the changes will be.

The first thing I tried is playing back the the arrangement loop, and then hitting record, adding/removing stuff by playing on session page, and then stopping the recording and switching back to arrangement play. ALL perfectly on beat.
I quickly discovered that the "record" and "back to arrangement" buttons are not quantized the global setting. It would work if the record button, and back to arrangement buttons were quantized.

It seems like it should be an easy task given Ableton's power.
What am I missing?
Thanks
Brian
