Select and bypass devices with midi controller

Post by markseo » Wed Nov 11, 2020 9:04 am

Hi, I am struggling trying to get this to work as i don't even know if its possible...

Basically, I want to have a bunch of midi effects with different settings (so for example, three different Scale effects for different tonalities, as if they were different quantizer presets) and I want to be able of switching between them using a midi controller. I have managed to do so with traditional knobby controllers, but I would like to do it using a sustain pedal. Problem is my Sustain pedal (M gear) only sends two messages with a range from 0 to 63 and 64 to 127 on that given midi CC. Do you know of a way I could use those midi messages to create some sort of "NEXT" and "PREVIOUS" command to go back and froth between those midi devices?

I have looked into buying some sort of midi pedal with some extra controls, like this one https://www.thomann.de/es/line6_fbv_express_usb.htm or this one https://www.thomann.de/es/harley_benton ... roller.htm . Would love to know if these devices send standard midi messages and its just a matter of mapping them appropriately, my main problem is I don't know what kind of message/command I need for that "NEXT" and "PREVIOUS" control. I can live with having multiple midi pedals and setting each one to different devices bypass switches, but if there is a way of just using the Sustain pedal as a sort of "up" and "down" controller, that would be incredible.

Thanks in advance :)

You should be able to do something like this in a midi effect rack I think:

then map your pedal to the vertical bright blue bar, aka the chain selector . the signal coming into the track will be passed to the chains that would be hit by drawing a line down from the chain selector.

you might have to wonk around with value ranges or do something silly wrt how you engage with the pedal but feels like you should be able to do it on principle

Hey thanks! Yeah I am testing stuf with midi effect racks, problem is my Sustain pedal only outputs two values (from 0 to 63 and from 64 to 127). I have been messing around with ranges on the command page, and using a midi monitor to check the input from the pedal, but doesnt seem to work. This would also mean that I would be pressing the sustain pedal to a certain level for A Scale, then find the sweetspot for B Scale, etc, which isnt ideal... I am thinking that maybe using the sustain pedal is not possible.

Do you know how I would go about using something like a Line6 FBV which has 4 switches. Do you know if its possible to set one switch to NEXT and the other to PREVIOUS? I dont even know if that kind of control message exists

So most midi footswitch controllers can output either one or two signals when you hit the switch (one for on, one for off), but a lot of them have software that lets you program the switch to cycle through a series of values. I have a logidy umi3 that does that. Looking at the FBV manual it doesn't quite look like you can do that (just switch between two values)

I'm not a midi expert but if you can find a footswitch that will let you

1: define a sequence of events to send

2: change the footswitches midi bank with a different switch

you could make two banks and have one switch step up in values and one switch step down in value. but that's clunky too because the note you stop on wouldn't be shared.

I'm willing to bet there's a dual footswitch out there that supports like "hit left switch to step down, hit right switch to step up" but I don't know what it would be. Maybe someone who's more of a midi wizard than me can help more here.

Yeah, Im also optimistic in believing something like that dual switch would exist, but I cant find anything
