Oxygen 8 and Live 5: MIDI not responding

Post by helixx » Tue Jul 26, 2005 5:05 pm

I sent this email to support but I thought I'd get feedback here too:

Here's my setup:

Powerbook G4 1.65ghz
1.5gb RAM
100gb HD
Behringer BCF2000
Midiman Oxygen8
Digidesign Mbox

The problem:

Most of the time I have problems using the Oxygen 8 from within Live5.
The problem, as far as I remember, started surfacing when I was using
the beta and has continued up until last night. I have tested the
Oxygen8 with other applications, suspecting that it might be the
controller itself but it works well within Reason and ProTools. It
seems to be just related to Live and I believe just Live5
specifically. I have been recording things using this keyboard using
Rewired Reason and Live4 for a while now.

Here's what happened last night during testing.

Set up the controllers such that the Oxygen was ON for Track Input.
The BCF2000 was set up to be ON for Remote Input.
When I tried to play the Oxygen, there was no MIDI response (no
little square lighting up in the top right corner of the interface).
The BCF still worked fine.

I turned on and off the keyboard entry mode and tried mapping it to
Simplers and Rewired Reason instruments but each time I got no
response.

I shut down and restarted the computer, started up Live5 and
everything worked fine. Even had good response from the Oxygen
controlling Rewired Reason Subtractors.

I switched to another track, dragged a few samples into clip slots and
prepared to do some fiddling around with Reason only to discover that
the Oxygen had stopped sending MIDI control values again. At this
point, nothing I tried would work. I could play Reason instruments if
I used the keyboard play mode in Live 5. I just got no MIDI response
at all from the Oxygen.

I shut down Reason and Live5 and tried Live4 and it worked fine. Then
i shut down Live4 and tried unRewired Reason and it worked fine as
well.

Any ideas? Let me know if there is anything you need me to try.

Maybe it's obvious, but did you check this:

I'm pretty sure that was checked but thanks for posting it. I'll look again tonight for a "sanity check" and make sure that's what it looks like.

cheers

i performed my sanity checks. i'm almost 100% positive that i have the device set up correctly but i'll post screenshots here tonight (and send them to alex).

the oxygen is still not working with live5. last night i had high hopes. i plugged everything in, restarted the powerbook and started live5 after everything came back. i hit a few keys on the oxygen and the small indicator block that shows MIDI activity in the upper right lit up with each keypress.

i dragged an operator to a free MIDI track (clean project set file) and immediately got no MIDI response. the light no longer lit up indicating keypress activity. my BCF2000 still registered MIDI activity and I could play MIDI using the powerbook keyboard but if i set the Oxygen up as the active device in the MIDI IN section, I got no sound... nothing.

i closed live, opened Garageband and the Oxygen works fine. is live doing something differently in handling MIDI messages than Reason or Garageband?

this is getting frustrating especially since i just bought the operator.

oh... it doesn't work in rewired slave apps either (Reason) for obvious reasons -- since Live isn't seeing the MIDI messages, they're not being passed to their requisite slave applications. i'll see if it works in pro-tools and also live slaved through pro-tools tonight.

i agree! i can't figure out if its just the midi controller having issues or some setting in live that's preventing it from working. i don't know anyone that has a midi controller that i can borrow in order to test.

i can just muddle through, hoping for a fix, for a while and then eventually pick up the korg kontrol49 i've been looking at for a while, but what if i get that home and have the same problems?!
