Hi all,
I bought a Roland VT-4, which serves as an Audio Interface using an USB connection into a USB hub and from there to my computer with Ableton Live 11. To the VT-4's outputs, I have connected studio monitors and a set of headphones, and to the VT-4's input I have connected a Shure SM7B with a fethead-amp (as the Roland VT-4 itself is too weak to create sufficient gain), powered by the phantom power of the VT-4. So far so good. When videoconferencing or doing other stuff using this setup, everything is fine.
But I have huge problems recording audio into Ableton using this setup, which makes me believe the Roland VT-4 is not suitable to be used with Ableton:
If I put the Volume on the Roland (which should be about the output volume levels) down to zero, and I put the mic sensitivity to the right level (I see the peak indicator lighting up if I speak too loud), no Microphone audio signal arrives at Ableton. If, however, I put the Volume on the Roland to 50% or so (normal listening levels) and unplug the Speakers (so just listen through headphones al reasonably low levels), not only does the Audio Track in Ableton record the voice signal, it also records all the other tracks that are playing in Ableton onto the voice track... Which makes my vocals unusable, as they basically contain the whole arrangement rather than being a 'clean' voice clip.
Can anybody help me figure out what the heck is going on here?
I searched the internet, obviously, before posting, and came across one other unlucky Ableton and Roland VT-4 user who seemed to have the same problem, posted on Reddit, but got no replies - so I hope I will fare better here!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Daniel

RTFM
There are 6 'inputs' to use with the VT-4
MIX (1–2) The sound of the LINE OUT jacks is input.
WET (3–4) The effect-processed sound is input.
DRY (5–6) The sound before being effect-processed is input.
My guess is that you use input 1-2 at the moment.
Try 3-4 or 5-6 (depending on what you want).
If you only 'see' 1-2, go into the Live preferences and add the channels on the audio tab.
Hope that helps

Re: Roland VT-4 not suitable to record vocals in Ableton Live 11?
Fantastic advice, @zsazsa, thanks a lot!
This was the solution indeed:
Enable the other channels in the Options/Audiosettings of AL11, without deselecting channels 1&2, and then select the proper ones (3-4 or 5-6) in the audio track settings ("Audio From") when recording vocals.
Thanks again!
