Compressor on input to mono file

Post by jimmynitcher » Mon Nov 01, 2021 11:34 am

Hi,
Is it possible to output to mono when a compressor is on an input channel that is feeding a mono vocal channel?

I'm guessing it isn't as all effects have stereo outs.

I just want a mono vocal file that has the compression on it.

Freeze and flatten creates a stereo file too.

Thanks

J

Would adding a Utility to the compressed track and selecting mono give you what you're after?

So, you have a stereo vocal, and after adding a utility (set to mono) and a compressor (Ableton stock compressor?) you still have a stereo output?

Hmmmmm. It totally should give you a mono file. Is there anything else on the track or the master bus that could be causing this? You got a delay or anything AFTER the compressor? No cheeky signal being routed to a send?

The mono utility still shows the file as stereo in the timeline, it may be playing in mono.

I want to record vocals in mono as usual but I want it compressed in real time (a compressor on an input channel) that produces a mono output file in the timeline.

So far the only way I can achieve this is to export the vocals with a compressor on the track, which is very time consuming if I want to see the results on the waveform with different compressor settings.

Thanks for your help.

May I ask why you do not want a stereo file? Soundwise it should not differ much I guess, or do you need it in another device or so?

Live works mostly in stereo, with stereofiles. Maybe I do not get it.......
