Editing out music performance mistakes

Post by jduffy56 » Tue Mar 22, 2022 10:32 am

Hi,

I am recording solo jazz guitar on Ableton so it is difficult to hid any performance mistakes. Rather than doing 50 takes to try and get a perfect performance, can someone tell me how to cut measures that are badly played from my track and paste in new measures from another take that have been correctly played? It would save me a huge amount of time and frustration. Thanks very much in advance. Jack

Hi Jack, if you’re on Live 11 you can use comping to record multiple takes and then select the bits you want from each one.

I'll mention something that seems to trip a lot of people up, including me...

YOU CANNOT REMOVE SECTIONS OF AUDIO IN SESSION MODE CLIPS! At least not directly. Apparently you can configure an external audio editor but I've never tried that. Personally I would still like this as a possibility but I'm not going to hold my breath. When I am recording parts for loops I generally start the accompaniment (or metronome) then play for awhile and trim out the "good" parts. Last night I was improvising on a bass line, and not all of it was great. I made multiple copies to different clips, then just selected the 4 bars here and there which were OK, then used "Crop Sample".

What you CAN do is copy or record them into arrangement view. If you want to turn that back into a clip/scene, then you can select the section and "Consolidate time to scene" I think it is. I'm on Live 10 Suite btw.

Hi Jack,
I also do jazz music. I have found that you can comp in (Live 11) in arrangement mode or in session mode you can do several takes (sections of your solo) and piece them together in arrangement mode. Once you move them to arrangement mode, you can split the audio file wherever you need to get ride of the undesirable parts. You also have the option of dragging the left or right edges of the audio file (to shorten or lengthen) if the imperfection is at the beginning or end of the audio file. I hope that makes sense. Thanks!
