The importance of noise

Post by evon » Wed Jun 08, 2022 9:26 pm

Just had another eureka moment. Still learning after all these years. No, not the learning. :) The moment was when I found the importance of just white noise in helping to filll out the, especially high frequency range, when using sampled instruments in a production.
Probably it is just part of layering. Between say 6 to 10 KHZ used to be a problem for me. So while using the Waves CLA Comp I found that in emulating its analog counterpart, it generated a reasonably high amount of white noise in those upper frequencies, so I started to experiment, and thought I would share it for any comments.

Yeah, noise is magic, it can do amazing things.
I remember seeing an amazing YT video talking about awesome tricks using noise, maybe I saved it somewhere, I'll check.
For example, if you e.g have a bad voice recording where a big chunk of the spectrum is missing, try adding a bit of filtered noise (a bandpass in the region where the recording is missing), and suddenly your voice while come back to life, without sounding like a voice mixed with noise. Of course it needs a bit more than that (like an envelope follower) but you can get pretty amazing results and rescue vibey but bad sounding recordings this way.

That is exactly what I did, surprisingly with my bass track. Like the whole session sounded fuller. I wanted to get some more frequency response in 6 KHz , and it seemed to help.

I actually started learning about this when trying to learn to understand what an Exciter does.

Handy ole’ Wiki brought up how noise is used in audio compression, especially with speech on phones and satellite radio. Explained why digitally compressed speech always drove me insane and sounded like random nonsensical stitched together noises.

All day long I spend my time trying to get rid of noise in people’s tracks, and here you kids are adding it on purpose.

Guess noise is sound at its most basic form. We are able to sculpt it using preset devices like instruments, synthesizers ect. But you all know that stuff.

Actually, we seem to be on the same page on this. Was currently looking more closely at saturation and exciters

If you two over saturate this game it may result in an odd harmonic relationship with the rest of the users :P

Then again, given the wide Spectrum of people on this board, it all just contributes to the general noise of interaction. Would hate to pass up the opportunity to contribute, whether hi or lo, we shall all band together and fill this notch with your particular niche.
