Help! I am losing my Mind. MacBook Pro M1

Post by Iomiosa » Thu Feb 09, 2023 5:21 pm

It's crazy.

Whatever I do - I can't get Ableton to run smoothly on my MacBook Pro M1.
Even with empty tracks, I get Audio Dropouts (0.5-1 sec). I reached a point where I do not make music anymore, I'm so frustrated.
I even Re-Installed my OSX -wiped out my whole drive. Nothing changed. CPU goes to 300-400% and Audio Drops out.

My System:
Apple 2021 MacBook Pro 16.2-inch
M1 Pro chip 10‑core CPU
16‑core GPU
16 GB RAM
macOS 12.6.1

UA Volt 276

Ableton 11.2.7

NO Cracked Software/Plugins at all!!

Who can help? Any Ideas?

Is it silicon compatible? Did you try with the laptop's built-in soundcard?
Are you sure you're not running Live in Rosetta mode?
If that doesn't help, you should definitely ask Support!

1. Make sure you're not running any other services that are Intel based (and run under Rosetta)
2. Make sure you're not running Ableton via Rosetta
3. Set your latency buffer size to 128 samples in Ableton as this seems to be the optimal setting for Apple Silicon Macs

Not sure if this is real advice on my part or not, but another thing I do when I first install Live is to just have it open and not use it for a few hrs. Keep sleep mode off. Just let it do it’s indexing and all that.

Nah this issue is real AF and it's bloody annoying. Same thing regardless of sound card or using the laptop speakers. I am not running with Rosetta an have shut down all my other apps. Ableton reports using 5% CPU. Activity monitor reports that the efficiency cores are around 60-80% capacity and the performance cores are almost idle.

I paid to upgrade Ableton because 10 was unusable. 11 is no better. I am currently on Ableton 11.2.7.

I find it pretty hard to believe that Ableton can't reproduce this. They need to fix their shit.

What buffer size are you using? I'm using 2 M1 Macs without any issues (I know that doesn't help your issue)

hello
I feel your pain. I've got an M1 Max 16" mbpro and i get short pops & dropouts when i drag n drop an FX to a track, and I cannot switch between midi tracks in a live set without getting a pop/dropout. so infuriating that i've been thinking about quitting live performances altogether. and just, argh!!!!!! i spent all these years & tons of money to get a "great laptop" for gigs and Live/m1 mbpro works like crap - a broken, unusable tool..

have you had any issues with the graphics lagging behind audio or vice-versa? i think i've had this issue since the 2nd update to Live 11. makes it mind-numbingly aggravating trying to do any editing in the arrangement view... i don't even want to use LIVE anymore. sucks

but wait!!! i updated to Live 11.3.2 and the issue seems to have stopped.. i've tested a few different sets and haven't reproduced the pop/dropouts even once! and the audio and GUI are synced up again. can't explain how happy/relieved i am. and please please please let it be fixed for now and ever!

have you updated to 11.3.2 ? good luck!

Curious if you've noted a the ableton index/places circle spinning when you have issues? I am on a windows machine, and the latest ableton update is really aggravating me. It's the only thing that's changed on my system and suddenly I have issues. The indexer takes up a huge amount of CPU and creates UI lag. But there is also a general slowness/lag at times, seemingly unrelated to the indexer. Overall though, until someone shows some real evidence I'd steer away from the idea that it's a problem unique to your apple machine. It appears to be an overall issue with ableton.

Thanks for the info. Given the problems I already have with 11.3, I'm a little hesitant to sign up for the Beta.
Thanks

Just a long shot…are you using the Roland 1m plugin? I used to have this hardware/software synth and it did this to my system. Everything was ok once I got rid of it. I have the same system you have. I run 44.1 with 64 sample buffer and don’t seem to be able to max it out.

I you are not using the 1m plugin, I recommend you uninstall everything from your system until you only have native Ableton everything. Start with all your 3rd party plugins. Check if it’s the audio interface and change that to internal. Next look at non-music stuff. Slowly one at a time see how it affects your system. If at the end you only have a clean os install and Ableton native, and the problem remains, then it’s hardware. call apple and return it.

FIY…I am still running macOS 12.6.3.
You should probably do the same for now. I installed the new macOS a couple months ago and Ableton would not run on it. I have not tested the latest Ableton on the new os yet but it’s generally good policy to stay a year behind the bleeding edge. A new os will screw up your system!

You have one of the best music systems for right now. You should be totally happy with it.

It's doing the same with me. 1 - 2 tracks loaded and it has visual lags, CPU spikes, very slow, glitchy and annoying, its stopped me from composing music all together, I literally can't use it like this. This issue seems to be specific to Ableton because I have no issues with NI machine daw. Ive tested it with over 30 synths maxing out their unison too to push the CPU and the M1 can take it like a champ as I was expecting with Ableton, but no. Very very frustrating. Im going to uninstall everything and re install fresh, see if that changes anything

Is it happening with every set, or only some of them?
