Any way to reliably list ".als" in chronological order?
Any way to reliably list ".als" in chronological order?
Hi everyone.
I have written about it in the past. I really wish for the option to expand the "Recently Opened Projects" list to whatever I choose to.
Like showing me the last 100 projects , Not only 15-20 or how much it is now (someone once explained why its only these many being shown although I still can't wrap my head around why it is not possible to show 100 or 1000 recent projects) .
I then did a search named ".als" which result in all .als files on my system.
I then hit "Sort after Last changed" and it does not really sort them reliably . There is one opened 7th of January and under it one opened in February ,,,, so far so good, but then under that is another from January.
Till this day I have found no reliable way that's easy to understand in order to List projects I worked on in a Chronological order.
Any tips ?

Re: Any way to reliably list ".als" in chronological order?
where and how are you searching?
Re: Any way to reliably list ".als" in chronological order?
Either via Lives "Open Project " the one where you can manually navigate the computers folders and then I write in the
search window ".als" without the " of course . I then get (I think) all .als of the drive I am searching in
I then choose "sort by last created, opened , altered (whatever I choose) and see that the chronological order is not 100% correct
Or via the computer search function , same procedure ".als"
side information in case it makes a difference , am on Mac OS

the advanced search options in the Finder would probably do the trick:

Open finder.
Make sure "This Mac" is selected at top left.
Enter ".als" in search at top right, select "Name contains .als" from list it gives you.
Then click to order by "data last opened" or "date modified", whatever (if it's not shown in the header then right click on the field headers and select it from the list shown).
That works for me. How does that look to you?
You can then save the search too, and you could refine it to omit all the backups (with timestamps in square brackets).

Re: Any way to reliably list ".als" in chronological order?
I have tried this countless times. It does not work. If I for example choose "last opened" the first result is from yesterday 15:04 and the second from today. Now the third one is again from yesterday and so on and so on. Its all over the place. I would expect the top one on the list to be from today , which would make sense chronologically , but it doesn't . I don't have everything written down but I simply see it in the list. I miss recent projects of which I sometimes forget the names and then have to look endlessly. I know that there have to be dozens of recent ".als" in April alone but there is one handful only and then if I scroll lower I am in March already. No way this list is showing the reality or better said , what I worked on.lincolnkid wrote: ↑Fri Apr 07, 2023 10:03 amOpen finder.

There is something wrong. I know it might be my fault but I have not found a solution till now.
The only reliable list till now is the "Last Opened" inside Live itself. This one truly shows everything in perfect chronological order

It makes no difference. I tried everything proposed there.fishmonkey wrote: ↑Fri Apr 07, 2023 9:15 amthe advanced search options in the Finder would probably do the trick:

These are the first 5 things in the list based on "Last opened"
1) Yesterday 19:48
2) Yesterday 15:51
3)Yesterday 20:36
4)Yesterday 16:28
5)Yesterday 16:30
As you can surely see they are not in the correct chronological order

That is worrying. Does it sort correctly by other fields, eg filename?

Just tried it.lincolnkid wrote: ↑Fri Apr 07, 2023 1:50 pmThat is worrying. Does it sort correctly by other fields, eg filename?
Yes sorting by name works as I would expect. Names are being sorted in logical order

can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing in the Finder?
Re: Any way to reliably list ".als" in chronological order?
Unfortunately not cause there are things in the file names that are sensitive informationfishmonkey wrote: ↑Fri Apr 07, 2023 4:22 pmcan you post a screenshot of what you are seeing in the Finder?
However I am telling you. Sorting by name works as expected.
On the other hand sorting under any kind of Time relevant data is always in a funky order
No matter if its "last opened" "last changed" etc etc . When I look at it I can't believe it

You can obscure/blur the sensitive info and then post the screenshot.

What should be visible in the screenshot and what is the aim?lincolnkid wrote: ↑Sat Apr 08, 2023 6:42 amYou can obscure/blur the sensitive info and then post the screenshot.
Asking cause all I see is a normal finder window and a list of projects
so i am wondering what the aim is tbh ?

We're just trying to help, and might notice something you've missed.
But frankly this is a MacOS issue, not Live, so maybe best to pursue with Apple?

I know that most here try to help and I sincerely appreciate it.lincolnkid wrote: ↑Sat Apr 08, 2023 9:04 amWe're just trying to help, and might notice something you've missed.

I know its not directly a Live issue but asked here cause I thought that we are doing similar things with a Daw and a computer (to a degree at least)
so Folder and Project Archive Hierarchy is a common thing (I think).
That's why I wondered what other people do and how they tackle things like this , in this case this "issue" I encountered. If in a few days 3-4 people say "yeah I had this " then I know its a common issue and
if not I can see that it is more specific to my system and my workflow in which case you are right and I should turn to apple for guidance.
In your case, if you hit "List after Last Opened". do you get a reliable List where all .als files open in the correct chronological order ?
