Missing files with Live for Windows, project is OK on macOS !

Post by TenSquare » Thu Jun 29, 2023 6:27 pm

Hello everyone,

I recently had a problem opening an Ableton Live project on a PC running Windows 11, I'm using Live Standard 11.3.3. Live says 'Audio files are missing', but these files are actually present in the 'Samples' folder of the project. This project was originally created on a Mac mini running the same version of Live. Opening this project is no problem on another Mac.

I would point out that the 'Collect All and Save' function was indeed applied initially in Live under macOS, in order to guarantee that all the audio files used in this project are collected in the 'Samples' folder. On the PC, I tried without success an automatic then manual search for the 'missing' samples, although these 'missing' audio files are found as I said previously in the 'Samples' folder of the project !

After closer inspection of the paths to these 'missing' files, I realized that the filenames of all these samples started with a 'space' character. I don't know how this undesirable character ended up here (I'm not the author of the project), in any case it seems to be of no concern to Live under macOS because I manage to open the project without any problem on several Macs.

On the other hand, this undesirable 'space' character seems to strongly disturb Live under Windows, since it does not manage to make the correspondence with the audio files nevertheless present in the 'Samples' folder...

I finally solved the problem by opening the project again in Live under macOS, then renaming all the samples one by one thru Live's browser, obviously removing the unwanted 'space' characters. I then applied the 'Collect All and Save' Live function then transferred it to the PC. I then manage to open the project without a hitch in Live under Windows, so the problem is now solved !

That said, I'm not sure if this filename bug is caused by Windows itself or by Live for Windows. :?

Do you have an opinion or an info on the matter?

Cheers.
Guillaume
