Rollback audio tracks to a previous version?

Post by JustAnotherBH » Tue Sep 05, 2023 4:55 pm

This morning I recorded three vocal takes on separate audio tracks, then sliced them up and used what I thought were the best bits from each, resulting in a verse on track 1, a chorus on track 2, bridge on track 3, etc.

I'm no longer sure I did get the best bits, and have been trying to work out how to rollback to the three original tracks. Their original .WAV files are still sitting in the samples/recorded folder.

How do I go about restoring the original vocal recordings back into the project? I thought there might be a simple right click menu option that would allow me to view a list of previous versions and pick one to rollback to, but I can't find anything like that.

Technical info: I'm running the latest version of Live 11 Intro (11.3.10) on Windows 11. My audio interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen. The operating system and all my drivers are up-to-date.

Thanks.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody has come across a need to do this before. Is it really that unusual to want to restore an audio track to a previous version?

Sometimes I save a live set as a copy so that I can go back to the original version if I need to. I do that when I want to try something out.

Otherwise I save my projects on an external GIT server, so that I can restore practically every version ever created.

I figured out how to do this, and thought I'd post the solution in case anyone else needs to do it.

The following steps work for me, running Ableton Live 11 on Windows 11, using the default folder structure.

1. You should see a Current Project folder in Ableton's Browser Sidebar. Click on it, then in the Browser Content Pane, click on Samples.

(If you don't see a Current Project Folder in Ableton's Browser Sidebar, click Add Folder, then navigate to the folder where the original sample recordings are saved. Click Select Folder to add that folder to the sidebar, then click on the newly added folder.)

2. Scroll through the list of files until you find the one you want. All the files include a timestamp in the filename.
3. Once located, simply drag the file onto a blank Audio track.
4. If you added a new folder to Ableton's Browser Sidebar, you can now right click on it and remove it if you want to keep things tidy.

In the Ableton project folder there's a folder called backup where previous versions of projects are saved
