grid move with tempo change

Post by jonpb » Tue Oct 10, 2023 1:02 am

I need to sync the grid with the tempo of a raw audio recording. When I change the tempo the audio file moves and the grid stays stationary. How do I change this so the grid moves and the audio stays stationary?
Thanks.

Well, if you look at it from the opposite side it's the grid that's moving, that's just how it works in Live.
Make sure that your clip is not warped so its tempo doesn't change, even though it looks so when you change the global tempo. Set your audio start point on the grid, adjust your tempo so the grid matches your audio (and yeah, the clip will look like it is stretching, but that's actually the grid that stretches).

Use Follow/Leader. Warp the file and switch the clip to be Leader and the grid warps to the audio.

That is exactly the problem. Looking from the "opposite side" makes no sense to me.

Before I can turn on warp on a raw recording I have setup the grid, right?

1) I have a raw recording
2) Turn warping off
3) Tap tempo to get a rough grid alignment
4) Find a spot to set the 1.1.1

Now I need to fine tune the grid. I can see the transients in the audio file, it's all good, I just need to line up the grid. I change the tempo and boom, all the transients have moved. Now I'm all off quilter.

I need the grid to move, not the transients. That would make this some much fun, and not a decent into hell fire madness.

Thanks, that's a good idea, I'll try it. These recordings are snippets of ideas., so I might need to break it up into sections before the AI could figure out the timing, but it might work.

You can warp it manually. If you learn warping in Live, you’ve basically grasped one of the initial elements that started the concept of Ableton Live.

It takes practice and mistakes. But basically,
-removing all the markers.
-setting marker 1.1.1 on a downbeat of preferably beginning of a phrase (like 8 bar section or 4 bar section or whatever)
-putting markers that match the phrasing at the points in the song where it makes sense (if you have 1.1.1, then marker 9.1.1 would be on the downbeat after an 8 bar section has completed)

Get through the song. And then go back and add markers inbetween where the song ‘drifts’ furthest in tempo. So in the first 8 bars, it might seem really close by 1.1.1 and 9.1.1, but somewhere at 6.1.1 it’s not on the grid, just push the waveform to align with the grid, and it’s likely going to push everything else in that section a lot closer in place.
