The move from Live 11 to 12

Post by humpo72 » Tue Dec 05, 2023 10:04 pm

Having moved to Ableton Live during the life of live 11, I have never gone through an upgrade. A few questions regarding the upgrade to Live 12. Is it a new install or an update to the existing live 11 installation? If a new install, can I still use my packs content & user library which is on an external drive? im guessing for the packs, it will just rescan the location I have them if I re-point it in settings.. for the user library is it advisable to start fresh & copy stuff about? so many questions running around in my head lol.

It’s a new install that sits quite happily alongside Live 11. 12 inherits all of 11’s libraries and file-paths automatically. You might have to manually set one or two minor settings in Live 12’s preferences to match your 11 settings, but never anything major like sound libraries etc.

In the new browser, all your custom Packs, Places and Favorites carry straight over, just the same as they were in 11. They’ll all inherit the same paths 11 was expecting to see.

That’s been my experience through many Ableton updates. Hope this helps!

This might be a stupid question, but once 12 is installed, should I uninstall 11 or do you need both? I am also new to Ableton so just want to check, apologies if this is a stupid question :P

not a stupid question at all--you can keep both installed simultaneously. in fact, you probably should for a while, until you're comfortable working in 12 and know that any v11 projects you want to move to v12 are working properly. once you're good, you can remove Live 11 if you like. have fun!

I hope this is an appropriate thread for this question.

I just finished the AL 12 30-day free trial. Lots of fun, but I'm not ready to purchase it just yet.

Can someone please confirm that this is the procedure to uninstall?;

And also, I need to ensure that I definitely do NOT get rid of anything that pertains to Live 11, which is still very much active, and I will now be returning to projects in Live 11

Thanks!

You can just delete the Ableton Live 12 application in macOS Finder
Mac Studio M2 Max and MacBook Pro M1

Genelec M030; Live 12.2; macOS Sequoia

UAD Apollo Twin

Ableton Push 2

as migrated from L11 to L12 - i kept both versions installed, to eventually save things in Live 11 for Live 12.

I also made a copy of the User Library, which worked with Live 11 and kept both of them, because Live 12 had some changes. I know if the UL is quite big this isnt to good working. But it helps to save between both versions and work at the same time time inside the UL in one version.

Otherwise Settings are copied from L11 to L12 automatically.

I dont know its not very complicated.

After you are done, you just go and delete L11 if you dont need it anymore.

A few prior entries in this thread suggest caution about deleting Live 11 until they know Live 12 will accept their files. Why is that? Isn't it guaranteed that Live 12 will remember ALL settings from Live 11 AND recognize all files? So is there any real reason why I need to keep Live 11 since I plan to put in the time necessary to learn 12? Also, most of the changes advertised seem to pertain to midi functions. I have more and more these days been using analog instruments for my recordings (and yes, at times midi for samples, especially for percussion). Has anyone noticed any obvious benefits yet in the audio, not midi, domain? Just wondering as those aren't advertised much. I am excited to find out myself though. Part of me wondered why I would spend the money if most of the changes are for midi users, but it seems proper to keep upgrading somehow... I am praying that one of the smallest little things I didn't like in Live 11 was improved: you know how you can create a separate lane for an automation? To raise or lower that effect (say, for example, a volume automation), you have to find a teeny weeny little square in the middle of the automation that is very hard to even see, let alone find. It would drive me crazy. I hope this time it is a bright erotic symbol that no one can possibly miss.
