"audio in" option for midi channels + "midi in" for audio ch

Post by vexkon » Fri Aug 05, 2005 2:02 pm

These inabilities are a serious hinderance for the modular users. There are tons of vsti's that now take audio inputs, as well as vsts that take midi inputs. I'm sick of having to use a subhost just to get around these problems.

you can already send midi to vst!
just make a new midi track and send your midi data to the vst. this worked at least for Absynth FX.

like i said though "modular users". For instance, if I want to use energyXT as a vst. It acts as a subhost and would have a vsti within it which obviously would require a "monitor on" for midi as well. For those not needing this option, it would simply be a matter of clicking the hide buttons on the side. But modular users can't afford to be without the great audio possibilities of abletons.

I think what they are suggesting is they want to send Audio and Midi to Absynth FX... not just midi.

I didn't say it wasn't possible, I just was being lazy and didn't feel like spelling it out either... but I guess I will.

- Setup an Audio Track on Track 1.
- Put your Absynth FX or Vokator or Reaktor or whatever here into track 1.
- Put a clip into Track 1 and just hit play.
- Setup a Midi Track on Track 2.
- On Midi Track 2, Set MIDI To as 1- Track 1.

At this point you should see a dialog box underneath the dropdown that has the name of your FX. If you put multiple FX here you will see that you can select which FX to route the midi to.

- Now arm Track 2, your MIDI track and play some notes. This should work magically.

ok you are right about audio to midi, but there still is no midi to audio for such plugins like eXT. XT works as a vsti because we can turn monitor "on". But there is no way to do this on a audio track.

Why would you want to put an instrument into an audio track? You do know that you can route audio to a midi track as well? You should be able to do whatever it is that you want in the midi track.

your not thinking "modular". There's plenty of reasons. Maybe the most simple one is something called a "note switcher". In eXT I could have tons of effects that could be switched on the go by note switcher. But because there is no midi input I am SKREWED. There are tons of other things I would use it for as well.

Why not load energy xt into a midi track, set it up with audio in's and your note switcher... and then point your audio track to only output to energy xt's inputs?

apparently there is something I am missing, because it seems plenty modular to me.

I already have a workaround. I add XT in a midi, then use a midi out plugin and then midiyoke it over to the audio track. Sure it's not hard, but neither is letting audio have a "midi in". As far as programming goes, I would think this would be pretty easy to implement.

...and it would get rid of the latency!
