Instrument Rack Sample Consolidation

Post by llorenzo » Fri Feb 02, 2024 9:26 am

Since the new Push 3 Standalone I'm trying to sort through my over 10 years grown library of all kinds.

With "Instrument Racks" which have a Sampler/Simpler inside it is a pain to find and manage the samples associated.
Often the samples and the "Instrument Rack" are all over the place.
Ableton has not given clear constraints to where a sample should be located but also missed out on quickly sorting samples afterwards.
Really usless is the "imported" folder. Cause it is just a huge mess.

I would like a general function to consolitate an "Instrument Rack" ( with Simpler/Sampler ) and a single Simpler/Sampler preset.
I would like to:
  • Gather all samples used in an "Instrument Rack" and move them to a folder I choose/create.
  • See the assoziated "Instrument Racks" for a sample.
  • Find duplicated or orphaned samples.
  • Move an "Instrument Rack" into another folder and have the sample path automatically adapted.
  • Delete an "Instrument Rack" and its assoiciated Sample.
  • Transfer an "Instrument Rack" to Push 3 Standalone without having to rebuild the library path on Push.
This function should be straight forward and avoked from the level of the "Instrument rack".
( Not to have to go into the samplers inside the rack.)
Maybe some of the functions are better placed in the Find Sample Panel.

I'm currently on Live 12 Beta.

What do you think?

+1 on this.

Found this post while searching for a way to consolidate/flatten audio in a rack. For example when you build a "synth" by transposing samples, and you use complex warp and adjust envelope and formants on different keys, but want to then lock it down as unwarped samples...

but that's another subject, and regardless, the suggested feature of a "collect and save" for instruments rack should be a simple task.

+1 for sure

my understanding is that it just places them all in 'User\ Library/Samples/Imported' but this caused a problem for me because I didn't use the "user library" as my main folder for organizing. Drag/dropping a rack with samples into the browser would create a project folder with a 'samples' folder and my instrument, so that means expanding 3 folders to get to my instrument. The other option was clicking the 'save' icon on the rack which would default to placing it in the 'user library' which I didn't use, and in this case the samples would get placed into the 'User\ Library/Samples/Imported' folder.

My solution was just to put my personal folder that I use to organize nested inside the 'user library' and toss that folder in the sidebar. It places the samples in the 'Samples/Imported' folder still but at least I don't have to have 3 folders per instrument now. It is unfortunate that deleting my instrument doesn't clear the samples from the folder though, it's just inefficient. There should definitely be a better way to manage this.
