ReCycle rx2 format support

Post by raapie » Sun Aug 07, 2005 7:45 am

Now that Mp3, Ogg and Flac are supported, I ask myself: why not rx2 too? That would be great. Most other software supports it too and it's the best format for drums probably. Datacompressed, so efficient too!

I second this.
Having REX 2 support would mean all my loop based catalog would be usable in Live, and I could phase Reason out of my setup.
It makes so much sense!

Second that too. Rex support plus the possibility to edit slices as midi notes would mean a goodbye to Reason for me

Yep, rex2 should be importable indeed :!: Would be nice to get rid of Reason just to convert rex2 to audio. My wote is in

Ableton, please implement rex/rx2 import. It would also be nice to have rex files appear in the browser as folders where you can access, preview and load the single slices.

keep nagging

it was there in the first couple of alphas, then they realised it wasnt going to be ready in time

what you could do then was drag a rex file into Live and it would create an audio track and the file would be turned into an audio clip

obviously not the point of rex, but I liked that option as well just because I too have a folder full of rex files and it's an easy way to get them into live - I thought they should keep that behaviour but with a modifier

of course the intended behaviour was to drag it in and have a sampler created with the slices and a midi clip

hang on...got the alpha response:
Guys, I am really sorry. But REX support most likely wont make it into the release of Live 6. We thought we are far enough, but found difficulties we can't overcome in the short time till the release. I know some of you were looking forward to it, but please understand that it is better not to release a half ready feature. Nevertheless we continue working on that feature and plan to integrate it in a even better way in a future update. Hope you understand.

I also have a strong desire for REX2 support.
The lack of REX2 support is one of many factors driving me to use Logic more frequently as Logic has excellent REX2 support. I particularly like the REX2 support in the EXS24 soft sampler and hope to see similar functionality in Ableton's Sampler in the future.

Currently, I am juggling three applications in order to slice a break, then deconstruct the slices into 8bar MIDI files associated with little directories full of samples, them organize them for live performance. I have been using Live since version 1.5 and have not found an easier way. I know there are those in this community who believe that slicing can be achieved by manipulating basic clip properties, but that is just too time consuming. If I was going to do that, I would just cut all this up in an old-fashioned wav editor and write a new piano role to play it back. There are real time-saving benefits to the approach taken by Recycle. That said, I have no specific love for Recycle. If anyone has a better solution. I am all ears.

I do find that the following suggestion in the FAQ is pretty inadequate for my purposes.
Does Live support the REX file format?
Live currently does not support REX files. We cannot say for sure when Live will support this feature. The best way to integrate REX files with Live is to ReWire Reason to Live and use Reason's Dr. Rex player to play back your REX files. To learn how to ReWire Reason to Live, please see our ReWire tutorial here.
My current process allows the content of my REX2 files to be fully integrated into Live by breaking them up into there constituent MIDI and Wav files in an organized manner. This is a preferable solution, but it would save me a lot of time if I could do this directly in Live instead of needing to use Logic in between. And of course, being able to truly slice and output 8 bars worth of MIDI and Wav files all within Live would be even better. This is sort of possible now, but is basically such a pain that I am driven to use Recycle to make it easier. And thus we come full circle to a list my request for REX2 support and/or slicing within Live. Or just politely tell me something I don't already know about Live that solves my problem, but this would surprise me.

Please remember, the goal is for 8-bar Wav files to be broken down into a series of hits, loaded into a soft sample, and played back by a MIDI file in a way that sounds just like the original 8 bar file by default.

i thought this too and was surprised when there was no support, but if you've got recycle 2 then you can export as soundfont (sf2) anyway. bit of a hassle to go through all your rex files again and re-export them but it can be done.

+1 for this. Hard to understand why a beat mapping application cannot understand all beat mapped files.
