Live 12 Memory Leak - M1 Mac

Post by Takeaction » Sun May 19, 2024 11:41 pm

Ableton Live 12 keeps on climbing in RAM usage even in the background. On an empty project the RAM usage will climb about 50 MB every 20 seconds up until Mac OS warns me that I've ran out of memory at 40 GB usage.

I've reset Live as detailed on Ableton's website. I've updated the OS to the latest version, I've tried disabling all 3rd party plugins and restarted. I've tried disabling Max. I've also tried deleting the live database. I can't think of anything else I could potentially debug and I'm lost as whether to downgrade to Live 11.

Live 12 starts at about less than 1 GB RAM. Then it slowly increases the longer the application is open even when idle and the audio engine is off. The memory leak problem stays even when opening/closing a project the leak in terms of memory is presistant until close. The longer Live 12 is open the more RAM it consumes up until it crashes. :(

I can't seem to find any similar stories online about this bug. Has anyone experienced any thing similar and have managed to resolve the issue.

Ableton Live 12.0.2
Mac Mini - M1, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD
Mas OS Sonoma 14.5

Please contact Support.
While this issue seems very rare, I’ve heard of at least one other similar case.

Looks like I'm bouncing stems and downgrading to 11.3.25.

Hope it's fixed in the future.

Love u Ableton <3.

OK so after some more trial and error I've managed to figure out that the memory leak was something to do with the default project I had setup. After changing the default set I'm not having excessive RAM useage any more. Weird bug.

Any more info about this default project ?
Did you have any third party plugins on it ? It could help other users...

I had 3 plugins on my master. Pro-L2, ADPTR Metric AB and VISION 4X. I think the bug started after updating metric AB potentially.

I'm having the same issue very frequently on Live 12 Suite with an M1 Mac. There's not much rhyme or reason to when it starts: a project was running fine the other day until I added a Utility to the master chain, after which the CPU usage went up to over 400% and my Mac ran out of application memory. I've seen this occur in most of my projects, it seems to be more common on ones with a lot of tracks/devices anyway. Unfortunately it's made Live unstable enough that I've moved most of my production into Bitwig for the time being.
