When should "Keep latency" be enabled?

Post by nc2010 » Wed Jun 26, 2024 8:39 pm

Hi,

It seems the "Keep Latency" button is really useful in Live12!

Especially to disable this button... I've watched a few videos about it, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1p347mmR-s... See also https://www.reddit.com/r/ableton/commen ... y_finally/.

Everyone in videos show the benefits of disabling it.

But I'm wondering:

* if it's all the time better to have "Keep latency" off, why is there even an option?

* in which case is it good to have "Keep latency" on?

* why is "Keep latency" on by default, since everyone shows it's better off?

* and the biggest question: why did they keep "keep latency" enabled by default for 20 years before, since it seems everyone just wants it off. It cannot be so simple, there is probably a good reason for this? :D

Thanks

Keep latency is NOT better to have off all the time.

(Edit)
I just realised my post here was like a crazy person rant . Written by a madman.
I should write something proper and take care over it

Example scenario
Excuse me if I'm wrong, but you just gave one more example showing that the button "Keep Latency" should be better ... OFF than ON
(I agree with you, it seems to be far better!)

Now my question was: is there one single scenario for which "Keep Latency" would be better ON?

I don't see any!

No, I gave a counter example

I deleted my post because I'm too tired to explain it coherently - but if you play a (for example) soft synth and it has latency , or an input audio device such as a drum machine and you have everything synced with latency compensation ( which is essential to keep on to maintain inter track sync) then you are listening to a certain beat synced mix. If you "keep latency" the recording will be the same as what you heard.
If you turn "keep latency" off it will move your recordings so they are out of time compared to what you monitored when you recorded

To put it another way. If you are monitoring through live and using effects, especially beat synced effects, on those audio inputs - you want to "keep" that latency because it was "compensated" IE put in time. So you want to keep it in time and in sync like you heard.

If you turn it off then Live will move if from where you heard it to where it would have been. That seems like it's better but Keep Latency is maintaining your monitoring experience

No, I gave a counter example
Thanks for your answer.

I don't exactly get it... (maybe also because it's too late and too tired)

Can you give your counter example scenario as a step-by-step reproducible example?
Example:
1 Start with a blank project
2 Add an Audio track with ...
3 Add an Audio track with ...
4 Do this
5 Turn "Keep Latency" on, hear that ...
6 Turn "Keep Latency" off, hear that ...

Thanks in advance, it would help a lot!
