'Set 1.1.1 here' is not an option when multiple clips are selected

Post by Matt_Quinn » Thu Sep 12, 2024 2:31 pm

Hi all,

Anyone know why the options for 'Set 1.1.1 here ' and 'Warp From here' disappear from the right click menu when you select multiple clips? I'm trying to warp some multi track stems. I have it working fine by linking the tracks & dragging the first downbeat to 1.1.1 in one of the clips, but normally I just warp single clips using the 'Set 1.1.1 here' command which is way faster & easier IMO. Clips are all the exact same length (they were split out from a single file with the full mix). Can't find much info about it online or in the manual. Thanks!

What if you just set one of the linked clip (i.e Track) to 1.1.1 here?
The linked clips should follow.

Multi-clip warping should work as you expect, but I reckon every time I had to do it for some reason it's always been a bit painful. Mainly a matter of how you select all the clips (should be the exact same length)... which seems to display different results wether selecting in one way VS another way (which I can't detail, since that's where something mysterious seems to be happening)

The option to Set 1.1.1 here isn't even available on the context menu once the tracks are linked. I just put a Warp marker at the first downbeat in one of the clips and dragged it back to 1.1.1 in the Arrangement grid and it seems to have worked, but this particular piece is a very constant 174 BPM. Normally after setting the 1.1.1 marker, I'd use 'Warp from here at 174 BPM' to make sure the rest of the tune aligns to the grid. I can go through manually and adjust it but its very cumbersome compared to the Set 1.1.1>Warp from here @ _BPM combo.

Hi Matt,
Did you every find a fix for this. I have the same problem and have spent two days trying to select multiple clips and every time the right click menu does show any Warp options. Everything is fine when I select a single clip.
I am using Ableton 12 Standard edition for Windows (Windows 11 Pro running on a 13th gen i5).

I have tried:-

1) Session mode.
2) Arrangement mode.
3) Importing the files from separate files with autowarp off so that they are all the same length.
4) In Session mode: Cutting and pasting the clips into other tracks to ensure they are the same length.
5) Consolidating the tracks.
6) Linking the tracks.
7) Selecting the two clips using Shift.
8) Selecting the two clips using Ctrl.
9) Warping one clip and then all of the above.
10) Warping one clip and then selecting both clips and removing the warping and then trying all of the above.

I never see the Warp menu unless only one track is selected.

Surely we are not alone on this?

Hello!

I ended up reaching out to Ableton directly to ask about this & they confirmed that there is currently no way to use those options. You may be able to see the entire discussion here, I'm not sure:

https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/requests/2945142

Thank you for contacting Ableton. This is Kaho from the Tech Support Team. I'm here to help you. I also noted that you might have posted a similar thread in Ableton's forum.

Please let me know if I understand your concern correctly: You're asking why the "Set 1.1.1 here" and "Warp from Here at X BPM" commands are not available when multiple clips are selected or when tracks are linked for editing in Live. You usually use it for a single clip—setting the first downbeat and warping from a specific BPM—works well for individual audio clips but becomes cumbersome when warping multiple clips simultaneously.

I've created screenshots based on your description of the features you're referring to when one clip is selected. Please let me know if these are the menu options you're referring to.

fter running some tests, I'm afraid that warping multiple tracks and setting them to "Set 1.1.1 here" and "Warp from Here at X BPM" is not available in the contextual menu (right-click) in the current version of Live. It seems that warping algorithms are designed to treat clips individually. This ensures precise control over each clip's timing, especially since audio clips can vary in length, time signature, or content.

That being said, I understand why you find it cumbersome to manually warp by setting a warp marker on the first downbeat of one clip, dragging that marker to the timeline’s 1.1.1, and then adjusting any drift.
Moving forward, I'd suggest filing a feature request in our backlog so that our developers can take this into account in our future version of Live.

Feature Request: Multi-Clip Warping Support for "Set 1.1.1 Here" and "Warp from Here"

Description: This request is for adding the ability to warp multiple selected audio clips simultaneously using the "Set 1.1.1 Here" and "Warp from Here" commands in Live 12, similar to how it currently functions with individual clips. This would greatly enhance efficiency when working with multi-track recordings, such as stems or drum tracks, where clips need to stay synchronized while being warped.

Currently Live allows warping of individual clips using the "Set 1.1.1 Here" and "Warp from Here at X BPM" commands. However, when multiple clips are selected or when tracks are linked for editing, these options are unavailable. Users must manually place warp markers in individual clips and manually align them to the timeline, which is more time-consuming and less intuitive.

When editing multi-track recordings like drums, guitars, or vocal harmonies, users often need to warp several clips at once while maintaining their relative timing. With the requested feature, they could quickly set the downbeat and warp all clips in unison, preserving alignment without needing to warp each clip individually.

Benefits
Users will save significant time when warping multiple tracks together, especially in multi-track recording sessions.
Ensures that all linked or selected clips are warped consistently, avoiding potential errors caused by manual warping.
Provides more flexibility for users working with complex arrangements, allowing for faster edits and smoother creative processes.

The rep said they filed and submitted an improvement request in their backlog based on that description. So here's hoping it gets added! In the meantime, I've been using two workarounds.

1) Linked the tracks for editing and warp whichever track is easiest to align.
2) Warp the full song on one track, then duplicate that track as many times as necessary for all your stems. Then go track by track & replace the sample file referenced (IE the whole track) with one of the stems, and the warping should stay in place.

Bump because they seem to have fixed this! I am not on 12.3 yes but Sonic Bloom says this is now an option.

Yes, it's now possible since L12.3.
