Suggestion: Two-Way Sync Between Move and Live

Post by sodathief » Thu Oct 24, 2024 4:08 pm

Hi everyone,

I’ve been loving the new Move hardware. It's effortless to start sets on the go and later open them in Live via Ableton Cloud. However, I’ve noticed one limitation that could be improved.

Right now, it seems like the workflow is only one-way: You can take your Move sets into Live, but any changes you make in Live can’t sync back to Move. I understand this is likely due to the difference in complexity between the two environments—Live is more advanced, and Move is simplified.

That said, I think there could be a middle ground. I suggest allowing sets opened in Live from Move to stay in sync by limiting Live’s functionality to a more “essentials” level or in the Move/Note format. If I want to go beyond those limitations and add advanced features or tools, I would understand that this breaks the sync, and I would have to "save as" a new file.

Here are a couple of real-life use cases where I’ve run into this limitation:
  • Setting Loop Lengths: In Move, I can set the loop length but can’t specify which bar to start the loop on. If I open the set in Live to adjust this, I lose the ability to sync back.
  • Transposing Notes: I often want to transpose existing notes, but Move only lets me do this one note at a time. If I use Live to batch transpose them, again, I lose sync.
This is why I think having a way to maintain sync with a simplified feature set in Live could significantly improve the workflow. I would love to hear what others think!

Even if incompatible clips with plugins et al were broken down into rendered loops or rendered samples alongside MIDI data. The idea just needs to be there, so that I can come up with new ideas, and send those ideas back into that session with minimal friction.

I'm brand new to music production and incorrectly assumed two-way sync between Move and Live was already possible. It's completely plausible that I'm doing something wrong though because I'm at the very beginning of my journey learning how to use Live, so here's a recap of what I experienced. I created a set on Move, added some initial ideas to all four tracks, opened the set from the cloud using Live, and then proceeded to make some refinements to note durations and pitches on multiple tracks. I was expecting my changes to be synced back to the set on Move because of my past experiences using other software that utilizes the cloud for file storage. It was disappointing to lose my work because the only changes I made to the tracks would also be possible to make directly on Move. It would be great to see two-way file sync supported in the future for scenarios like this.
