M4L device that splits out a drum rack to tracks?

Hi folks,

I while ago i though i came across a M4L device that will automatically split out a drum rack to individual tracks (to allow freezing of sounds to reduce CPU load and for mixing), but now i can't find it.

Did i imagine this or does it actually exist?

Wait, i now see that you can drag a pad to a new MIDI track and it will also extract the MIDI for you, that's pretty cool.

It's a shame it doesn't work in reverse, so that when you drag a pad into an existing pad, it doesn't also merge the MIDI back into the object.

Although i guess you can do that manually.

If you show the drum chains, you can select multiple pads by CMD/CTRL or SHIFT by clicking the chains.
You can drag them or right-click and choose 'Extract chains'. (I guess this is the function you imagined exists.)
Note, however, that when you select multiple chains they all move together. So, four chains end up in a new drum rack with four pads. You don't get four tracks, with each a drum rack with one pad.

You can always move the drum chains back the same way, as you can drag drum pads from one drum rack to another.


As for merging notes, you can accomplish this with multi-clip editing.
- Select the clips using CTRL/CMD+click to enter multi-clip edit mode and enable the Focus button.
- In the Multi-Clip Loop Bar, select the clip from which you want to copy the notes.
- Select the notes in the clip and press CTRL/CMD+C.
- Then select the target clip in the Loop Bar and press CTRL/CMD+V.

It's a bit cumbersome, but it works perfectly for the occasional merging. And once you've done it a few times, you get the hang of it, and the process will be quicker.
