Loop Switch Automation or Reset

Post by TimKarnes » Wed May 14, 2025 5:31 pm

Hi! I'm looking to see if anyone has found a solution in arrangement view to either:
  • Automate the Loop Switch button or
  • Force Loop On or Off with midi, (instead of toggling it on/off)
Utilizing Midi mapping will only toggle it On/Off/On/Off.

For context, I play with a band that uses the loop to repeat a section of a song. When we want to move on from it, our drummer will press a MIDI trigger that turns off the loop switch, and then we continue with the rest of the song. The problem is, our Ableton computer is offstage, and there's no way of knowing if it is set to On or Off, if we accidentally press that midi trigger while we are on stage or we forget to reset it from one set to the next.

Is there a way to force it on, such as one midi note for On and a different midi note for Off? That way we could map a trigger to the start of the looped section that forces the loo to On, and we trigger the loop off when we need it. Each time it would reset to on when we start that looped section.

Is there some sort of solution that works like that, or a way to automate it?

btw, our computer needs to be offstage, and we can't use session view.
thanks!!!

Maybe use a knob to map instead? Then you can see if the knob is turned to the left or right (and it is harder to move by accident).

that's an interesting thought! The problem is we use a MPD16 as a controller, which doesn't have knobs...
