Ableton Move: External Synth, MIDI Controllers & Line-In Audio Control

Post by TimgleTangleBob » Sun Jul 06, 2025 9:49 am

Hi everyone,
I’m currently researching Ableton Move, especially how well it integrates with external hardware — which is a crucial part of my setup. I have a few specific questions and would really appreciate input from those with hands-on experience.

1)
Line-In: signal control and mixing
The Move has a stereo Line-In, which is great to see.
Is there any way to control the Line-In level inside the Move — via a track fader, volume knob, or mixer menu — or is it just passthrough-only?

This is a major consideration for me, especially in DAWless or hybrid hardware setups.

2)
MIDI connectivity (external synths)
With firmware 1.5.1, the Move now supports simultaneous MIDI In and Out, and each track can be assigned its own send and receive channel.

How well does this work in practice when controlling multiple external devices?
Any limitations or unexpected behaviors when using it as a MIDI hub?

3)
MIDI controllers (keyboards, pads, etc.)
Has anyone successfully connected both a MIDI controller and one or more external synths to the Move at the same time (e.g., via a USB hub)?

Can incoming MIDI from a controller be assigned per track, or is it only global?

Greetings
Nils

Hallo again,
here is what I found out by myself:

1) Line-In: Signal Control and Mixing
The Line-In on the Move is a single stereo input with a global input gain control. This gain can be adjusted via a menu (you select an input levels icon and tweak the gain), but it’s not integrated as a separate track in the mixer. That means:

You cannot control the Line-In level per track or automate it within a set.

There is no dedicated fader or mixer channel for the Line-In audio.

The Line-In acts more like a pass-through with a global volume adjustment before the audio hits the internal tracks.

For live dynamic mixing or muting of the external synth audio alongside internal Move sounds, you’d currently need an external mixer.

This limitation is a frequent point of discussion — many users hope for future updates to allow Line-In audio to be assigned to its own track or mixer channel, enabling volume control, effects, and automation.

2) & 3) is possible.
