MIDI Drum Rack noise/buzz when using external drum machine.

Post by InteraX » Wed Sep 17, 2025 10:31 am

Hi all.
I'm trying to setup my first Drum Rack for use with my drum machine (Novation Drumstation). My drum machine has a dedicated stereo input on my audio interface (Behringer UMC1820).
I have a MIDI track setup as a Drum Rack with the external instrument device used to trigger each instrument and an audio track for the drum machine, added to a group for the drum machine.
Prior to upgrading to 12.2.5, I didn't notice any noise issue, however after upgrading to 12.2.5, there is a permanent noticeable noise/buzz on the MIDI/Drum Rack.
As I mute the individual drum instruments, the noise gradually disappears until all 'external instrument' devices are muted.
My solution right now is to either mute all entries on the drum rack or mute the MIDI channel and only use the dedicated audio channel.
Is this how this is supposed to work?
Thanks.

Audio interfaces input jacks generally expect balanced inputs (tip-ring-sleeve/TRS) while your drum machine likely has an unbalanced (TS) output.
This can be solved with the right combination of cable, off-the-shelf or modified. What type of cable are you using currently?
