Ableton Move - Controller Mode - Map Macros to Encoders

Post by electronic55 » Sun Jan 18, 2026 1:59 am

Hello

I did not find this when reading through the Move manual, so maybe what I am trying to do is not possible at this time.

Here is an overview of my setup:
1. I am using A Windows 11 PC with Ableton Live 11.
2. I have downloaded the drivers for Ableton Move to work with Ableton Live 11.
3. I made sure to update Move to the latest version tonight 1/17/2026
3. I set Move to Control Live mode

Here is the Ableton Live 11 Setup:
1. Ableton Live 11 in Arrangement View
2. Midi Clip + Drum Rack
3. I have filled the Drum rack with Simpler instruments
4. I am working with the Simpler instrument in the expanded view, and I want to assign the End Snap Marker to another encoder and use the Encoders to dial into where the sample starts and ends.

What I am seeing:

The Move Encoders are already assigned to the following parameters: Start Snap Marker, Attack, Decay, Release Filter Frequency, Filter Resonance, Filter LFO
When I select Map I am not finding functionality to assign the mapping to an Encoder.

What I want to accomplish:
  • I want to map the End Snap Marker to an Encoder
If it is not yet a feature, I want to pass on a rough draft of a development idea based on how I am trying to use Ableton Move with Live:
  • When in Control Live Mode the pads on the left side of the Move instrument are lit and I can change from pad to pad by selecting one of the 16 lit pads on the left side of the Move Instrument
I want:
  • When a drum rack is selected the user should be able to "lock" Move to the selected Drum Pad
  • When this action is done the 8 Encoders are the top of the Move instrument should be available for custom assignment to an Instrument's macros
  • If the user has added an audio effect behind the instrument or more than one audio effect, the user should be able to release the lock from the instrument and now navigate to the audio effect using the pad system or the Move wheel. Once the user has found the desired audio effect the user would lock the Move to the audio effect.
  • Now that the user has locked Move to an audio effect the user can assign custom mappings to the Move Encoders and the 16 pads on the right side of the Move.
  • A user may find it tedious to have to unlock from the audio effect or instrument and then unlock from the pad. Add a feature that asks the user if they want to save the mapping and clear all locks so they can now navigate elsewhere in Ableton Live using Control Mode.
  • How is the lock feature enabled?
  • I am not sure how the product design and engineering team figure out what combination of buttons lead a person to a menu and setting.
  • Shift + hit pad 1 time
  • How is a pad unlocked? Shift + hit pad 2 times
  • How is the locking feature completely cleared? Shift + hit pad 3 times.

Follow up on this--
I discovered that if you group an instrument you can then assign macros and achieve the desired state as described above.
