The Instacomposer 3 VST does not work well with Ableton. This VST generates 6 independent midi outputs, each on its own midi channel. The 6 target instruments are routed to from the one instance of the VST. Unfortunately, the target instrument midi channel cannot be filtered in Ableton. This leads to some bizarre workarounds that are not really satisfactory.
One solution I did find, and works well, was to wrap Instacomposer inside a Multi-MIDI Wrapper and each target instrument is preceded by a Max MIDI Receiver, filtered to the respective channel.
This solution works just a treat and I set up a template to use in my projects. When I came to use the template for the first time, I was shocked to discover that when I saved and re-opened a project created by the template, it did not restore the state of the VST. All the work created in Instacomposer 3 had disappeared! Actually, some tracks did get restored, but that was not consistent.
I know it’s definitely the Max for Live wrapper that is causing the problem because the state of the VST is preserved without using these devices. I’ve resorted to using Reaper and then exporting the midi to Ableton.
Any help please, especially in midi channel filtering.
