The Pocket Lite - a free feel-preserving M4L quantizer

Post by rubatoaudio » Tue Jun 30, 2026 7:21 pm

Hi I'm Lyle, a solo developer (Rubato Audio). I just released a free Max for Live device, The Pocket Lite, and wanted to share it (macOS + Windows / Ableton Live 12+).

It's a MIDI quantizer that aims to preserve more of the natural feel of a human take. The usual advice for this when quantizing is to quantize 50-80% instead of 100%. What my device does differently is allowing the percentage that the notes shift to vary based on how far they were from the grid to begin with - so notes that are close to the grid already don't have to move at all, while notes that really need correcting still get pulled in. It also has some other neat stuff like being able to quantize late notes differently than early ones. It works great on everything but has some extra deep features for drums.

Anyways, please check it out! https://rubato.audio/the-pocket/#free

There is also a paid version with some extra features (primarily, more feel-shaping and automatic grid-detection). And I make two other Ableton Live devices: Counterpoint (automatic left/right-hand splitting) and Just Play (tempo detection + time-warping for freely-played takes). All at https://rubato.audio

My goal with all of this is to open up ways of working that feel more like play, and there's lots more coming. I'd love feedback, feature requests, friction reports, and I'm happy to answer any questions.

Installation fails on macOS Tahoe 26.5.1.

After entering my password, I get a dialog stating:
" The installation failed. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

Thanks for the report and apologies! There was a naming mismatch in the way that installer was built ("The Pocket" vs "The Pocket Lite") that caused it to fail for macOS users. It has been fixed and version 1.0.1 is now available on the site
