L5: Serious Program Error

Post by kovacs » Thu Aug 18, 2005 7:32 pm

I have had Live 5 since it was released and am having some serious issues with it. Mostly I get crashes but now it is getting worse.

I recently bought Garritan Personal Orchestra and am playing the Steinway piano. Since it requires a huge amount of RAM, I bought 2 1GB TwinMos chips which I received today.

The first time I started Live today it didn't even load, but threw the following message at me: "A serious program error has occured. Please save bla bla". Then it promptly quit.

I checked that no processes were behaving badly and tried again. I managed to open a set I'm working on, which has a frozen Garritan piano track and some drum loops from Ableton, plus Kjaerhus Classic Reverb and Kjaerhus Classic Compressor.

I now get the "Serious Program Error" message about every 5-7 minutes. Live doesn't actually crash (yet) but it is extremely annoying.

I have set latency down to 1024 samples (about 24ms) so the strain on my Audiophile 2496 PCI shouldn't be that hard...

I don't know how to troubleshoot this. Can it simply be my new ram chips??? I don't get any erroneous behaviour in other programs so this is a bit weird... 8O

Some specs in my signature below. My motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-deluxe.

I have tried to reproduce the exact same set in Live 4.1.4. I even disabled DFD mode and loaded the entire piano to RAM - no problems at all in L4. So there's something fishy with L5 (or one of my plugins).

Hi kovacs,

I do not think that your memory chips are responsible for this problem.
But I'm not sure if I understand you right. You open a certain set and get the "Serious error message" about every 5-7 minutes, only with this certain set?
Does it happen after a certain action?

regards,
Alex

Alex,

No, sorry, I just mentioned that set because it is a piece I am working on which has a deadline this weekend... It seems to happen all the time in Live 5 regardless of what I am working on.

I have just bought Live 5 and downloaded the upgrade.... I have also bought a brand spankin new laptop with 1 gig of ram and I am getting "a serious program error has occrued..."

Live 5 is the only piece of software on this pc... no mail client, no MS office.. nothing and I am getting this problem.

I see the posts in this thread are like a year old... has anyone found a solution??? It is very frustrating.

They are a month old, not a year. :)

Try to contact Alex and see if he can help you out.

Hi Bender,

the "Serious error message" is a general message that appears when something went totally wrong. So only this message alone will not help us to find and fix potential bugs.

Please try out the latest beta of the upcoming bug fix update Live 5.0.2:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26978

If you experiences problems there too please let us what exactly you did and what happens.

regards,
Alex

Thanks for the feedback guys Image

I think part of the problem was that I installed Live 5.0 from the CD I got in the box, and then downloaded 5.1 from the website. I thought it was an upgrade but I think I should have uninstalled 5.0 before installing 5.1.

Anyhow, I have now uninstalled 5.0 and running 5.1 and it is much more stable. I have also stopped using complex warping plus stopped loading samples using RAM and it is working much better. Although I would prefer to be able to use complex warping.

I should also point out that my Echo Indigo dj card has not arrived yet so I am relying on the onboard sound to process everything. I am not sure if this makes a difference or not. My knowledge of such things is limited.
