Warping Problems in 'Complex' Mode

Post by shiv » Wed Aug 24, 2005 2:10 am

Hi!
This is my first post to the forum and I just wanted to post this error for the record.

I am remixing an old jazz standard and manually warping the track in live 5. I wanted to try using the 'complex' warp mode since I've never used it before and I was looking forward to checking out. Unfortunately, a few unexpected issues came up.

I brought the track into the session view and started warping it manually.
The auto warp feature tried it's best, but wasn't even close to finding the right swing.

In Live 4 I've worked out a process of setting a 1 measure loop in the clip view, and adjusting the warp markers when needed with the loop playing and the metronome on. I would use the arrow keys to jump forward and backward by one measure and make adjustments for each measure until I reached the end of the song.

I tried this same method in live 5 and some very strange things started happening in 'complex' mode. About a third of the way through the track I had been navigating forward and back by a few measures with the arrow key when a second 'ghost' warp ruler appeared.

I tried clicking on this ghost marker and nothing happened. I was still able to click on the main marker ruler, but it was too confusing seeing 2 warp rulers offset. Luckily I had been saving different versions of the file as I was going along and was able to go back to a version without the double ghost image. I would continue working where I left off and the 'ghost' marker kept showing up after a few jumps. It was annoying having to go back to previously saved versions of the file.

The second issue was that audio for the loop would occassionally stop playing for no reason. I had to stop the playback and restart the loop again to hear the audio. This was never a problem in live 4. I could easily move forward and back through a file hearing both the loop and metronome and skipping forward and back with the arrow keys. My cpu usage was only around 15% and I only had my .aif file loaded at the time - no other audio was playing and no plug-ins were loaded and running.

I saw that many people posted that they abandoned the use of complex mode for beats mode. This may be the only workaround for now, but I hope these issues can be addressed in future updates of live. I was really excited to try some new time stretching algorithms. Either complex mode isn't quite ready for prime time or my mac isn't up for the processing challenge.
