Live won't play after opening using Mbox/Pro Tools/CoreAudio

My hardware is Mbox, and I'm trying to open Live Lite 4.1.4 as a standalone application and just as a test, run the instruction tutorial. I am able to open the program and choose my digidesign hardware in the audio preferences tab, but when I try to hit play (in either arrangement or session view) nothing happens. If I switch my audio in/out preferences back to built-in, the program runs like a champ. The same thing happens, by the way in Itunes (ver 4.7). I should mention that no other programs are open, and I have searched the Digi forums and Ableton forums to no avail. I know there is some symbiotic relationship with Quicktime and I have re-installed an older version 6.5.2 at someone's suggestion, but it hasn't helped.

Anyone run into this before? Suggestions greatly appreciated.

do you have installed the latest Digidesign Core Audio driver 6.9 for OS X 10.3.x?
