Different technics to make transition between sessions

Hi there,

I 've tried to found on the forum how users switch live session lively.

I've had some disk saturation on stage. So now, I'm builting sessions of only 2 or 3 songs: 12 tracks,6 inserts ( autofilter, Eq4, Beat repeater...) 3 sends FX and a limiter Waves L3 on master per session.

But now the problem is : how I load a new session without silence.

I've heared some solution months ago but I cannot refound them.

just build your session with one, big song, scene after scene. The disk won't feel it, since your still only playing 12 tracks at a time.

I know this, but if you play a session with 20 stereo clips of 4 min each plus loops and Fx, you will see that live will have problem of disk saturation.

get a korg kaoss pad - you could echo out of the song (+ control another effect on the other axis) & use the two sample buttons to throw in some noises.

you could also produce ambient, soft tracks to fade in & out from a CD player in between songs while the next project is loading.

or.......

render your tracks then load them back in to Live & sequence them into one big project - that'll reduce the work on your machine.

Outboard effects seem like a good idea for this.
Within Live, I use delays with huge feedback to washout everything, then I can change tempo and whatnot while the tail fades.

With outboard, you could use a delay or a sample looper to keep the feel going rythmically. You could even just hook up a CD player with tracks that correspond to what you are switching from and to. A 'transition player' if you will.

Freaky interpretive dancers do the trick to. If they're good. no one will notice there's no music.

I wonder if rewireing to another sequencer would do the trick?
Could you switch sessions and keep, say, Cubase running audio or effects?

Pre-render, consolidate and mix!

No need for the computer to be doing so much work just to be chugging out the same stuff over and over again. Pre-render and consolidate the tracks that don't change, and even pre-mix the tracks that don't require live mixing.

That will free up your processor and disk to work the tracks that you want to alter live.

Then you can load everything into one set and not have to worry about loading another set. My current set takes almost 2 minutes to load, but I only have to do it once per gig.

Talked to Mr.Klein of Ableton about his live shows, he renders live versions "minus one" or minus whatever, which is how I do it too. My way is having various style sets- loops, vsts assigned for live playing and drag the " rendered for performance" tunes as clips. The tracks 1 & 2 are reserved for it ( so kind of DJ style)
This option let you have assortment of loops reserved as links.

i render tracks and use them as clips but then i will copy the clip and slice out various bits for use as elements in the beginning and/or end of songs to assist with mixes and fades.

so i'll have a main clip and then (maybe) an intro and outro clip. i can use the crossfader to determine how much the clips meld in the mix. i have about 4 channels labelled "deck 1", "deck 2", "elements" (for various loops and add-on clips and effects) and "crate" (containing songs that have als files pre-generated that i can just drag in as the spirit moves...)

deck 1 - intro
xfade mix into:
deck 2 - main clip
xfade mix into:
deck 1 - outro (maybe mix in some "elements" here to build interest)
xfade mix into:
deck 2 - new clip intro or just new clip

anyway, that's how i've been having fun with it. nothing too crazy.

I use to have a set of 20 or 30 songs, some loops (beats,bass,synths,voices). 4 tracks named "Deck 1, Deck 2" to channel A; "Deck 3, Deck 4" to channel B for the whole songs, and one or two tracks for the loops. I also have some clips 1-2 minutes long that I recorded in Reason 3.0 and can be used as a transition between songs. All the songs are warped and looped the first two or four bars at the beginning so that way I can play those bars and even create "new" songs with the loops and samples and, whenever I want, "free" the loop and let the song play straight. I have, also, a track with grain delay where I drop loops or even whole songs just to "experiment". With this set I could be playing for hours without the need of changing sessions.
