Speakers & Near Field Monitors

Please help me out with something...Which seems like the better buy?
I am looking for some near field monitors for my home studio. Its based of a PC & Mac running DAW software (such as PT, DP, Live, Cubase, Reason, etc...). My Setup is almost entirely digital & computer based. Money is not an issue, but I am limiting my options to these specific models (or if you have an alternative, it must be in the same price range)

if it was a choice between only those two I would have to go with the studiophile (ridiculous name, btw!) -solely based on the description on the website:

Studiophile: Has frequency charts and everythin'
StudioPro4: "perfect for desktop music, games and DVDs"...

I use Genlec 8030A and I'm very happy with them. They are sturdy to throw into a bag to go somewhere else with laptop to make music. For surround stuff I keep a second pair and a bass woofer (a client payed for those two extra speakers)

I would go for the new samson rubicons.

I´ve the older model, the resolv´s and they where the better choice when they where tested by a german music magazine against a lot of other samepriced brands as the m-audios.

As mine where damaged on a party I´ll replace them with the rubicons and a sub perhaps.

I have the M-Audio BX-8s, and bought the BX-5as for rear surround.

I was so impressed with the BX-5as that I now use them as my main monitors with the BX-8s in the rear.

I own a pair of KRK V4's which are great for a small bedroom setup.
They sound incredible but are also $400 a piece. (I got them for half on e-bay). You can't get pants-flappin bass but i can feel the wind on my face when i turn 'em up.

The RP series is nice too. A friend of mine has the RP8's only buy those when you have a BIG room else the bass will be too much. For a normal bedroomi would recommend the RP-6

Both are very detailed with an accurate placement.
THe V4's sound really musical though analytical, a joy to listen to.

I also have the V4's. They are awesome. Also recommend the RP-6. I say get neither of those m-audio ones & get the KRK's if you can swing it.

Personally, I love my Mackie HR824s. 250 biamped watts per channel makes these things wonderfully thumpy at loud volumes, and extremely accurate across the spectrum. These would be my recommendation to anyone looking to spend less then a set of Full-Size Genelecs. Best 1200 bucks I have ever spent on a piece of gear.

That said, I really like the BX5s, I think they sound really crisp and sparkly w/o being too bright. However, dont expect to get any real bass out of them. I would say a sub is mandatory with these for any kind of real critical listening (unless you were using them as a small-speaker reference, like NS-10s are typically used these days). I've not heard them, but I imagine w/ the m-audio sub (goes for like $400, I believe) they'd really sound beautiful.

My preference is to avoid using a sub, especially if you're not in a tuned, acoustically treated room. You're just asking for problems if you've got a reverberant room. Check out the 824s if you haven't heard them, they're a tremendous value. Otherwise, get the BX5s, they're still pretty cool.

Im not strapped for cash, but i don't want to pend more than $400 USD total. If I have to buy a $200 Amp for some speakers that are $300, im way over my targeted budget. I don't need an amp, I don't want an amp. I can deal with a sub, but once again, adding on a sub for $300 defeats my goal. I want something relatively cheap, yet of very good quality. So far the Bx5's seem like they are on the mark...but I was impressed by the StudiPro 4's at a local Apple Store.

I would love some Mackie's down the road...but I want to spend $400, not $2000 for a Pair.

I would like to know what people who have ENITIRE DIGITAL setups use. Mobile engineers with laptops would have good info i guess!

If you can post a price next to your recommendation it would be highly helpful too! Any help is highly appreciated!

i wanted to revive this thread, because i just ditched my beloved Tannoy's for a pair of Genelec 8030A's.

the Tannoy Passivess did the job for a good 7 years, served me very well but my g/f wanted some good speakers for her home DJ setup, so i figured i'd donate the Tannoys to her and move on to something else. Plus the Tannoys got jacked up a bit during moving..

so, onto the Genelec 8030a's....

man these things ROCK.
i've got a sub on the way but i could easily mix without a sub, and that amazes me for a pair of speakers with 5" woofers.

the iso-pod mounts are incredibly handy not only for isolation, but also positioning. and i feel they are much more stable than any other mounting solution for monitors (read: MoPads ) short of dedicated monitor stands.

They're rugged as hell too. I never thought i'd have a pair of speakers i could easily pack up and take with me for whatever reason, but these fit that category.

if anyone is interested in these, www.frontendaudio.com has a good special where they throw in a very good Mogami XLR cable ($45/street cable) per 8030A that you buy. and free shipping, can't beat that.
