perfrming Live tracks...Live

Post by DJ Release » Mon Oct 17, 2005 12:36 pm

Hi there,

I've got a gig coming up this weekend 22ndOct where i'm performing 1/2hr of my music (5/6 tracks) to a room full (hopefully) of people.

Check here for details - http://www.loosegrooves.co.uk/Live_Electronic.htm

I'm still franticly trying to finish a couple of these tracks (you know how it is!) so havn't yet looked how i might present them

I'm thinking it will be in a dj mix style using live, but have a couple of questions that hopefully someone can help on....

I'm planning on exporting my finished tracks (some Live some Reason some both) and giving them a quick bit of 'mastering' using Ozone then back into live - what setting should i be playing them back on for best results?.... (will the external mastering help?)

Also should i then be setting up a compressor on each track in Live?? Or the master out?

I know i may find answers to these questions when i try it later in the week but people on here will have already done this and i've just been writing for weeks....(time is running out :))

Finally are they gonna sound as good as playin them on CD? (i hope so)

Any other help/hints appreciated - i'm gonna use my BCF2000 and UC16 as controllers...

Cheers

Yo dude,

I've done a few Live performances, I'll do my best to help you on a few issues:

I'm planning on exporting my finished tracks (some Live some Reason some both) and giving them a quick bit of 'mastering' using Ozone then back into live - what setting should i be playing them back on for best results?.... (will the external mastering help?)
When we've played live there's always been a sound engineer with a rack full of compressors and other gear to help sweeten the sound. Having said that a bit of external mastering of your own will never hurt. I use a slightly different technique for playback: I split the entire track into 8-bar sections to give me a bit more flexibility with structure and I automate the sections where my hands are tied up with send FX or triggering samples.
Also should i then be setting up a compressor on each track in Live?? Or the master out?
I personally use an instance of PSP's Vintage Warmer on the master outs, I'm not saying this is the best or even the correct solution but it seems to work for me.
I know i may find answers to these questions when i try it later in the week but people on here will have already done this and i've just been writing for weeks....(time is running out )
He he, I always work better under pressure too mate.
Finally are they gonna sound as good as playin them on CD? (i hope so)
I've never noticed any artifacts when I've been using Live for gigs.

Any other help/hints appreciated - i'm gonna use my BCF2000 and UC16 as controllers...
I don't own either of these devices so I can't really comment, I use an Edirol PCR 30 with the knobs mapped to track FX sends and the faders routed the cutoff on the OhmBoyz OhmyGod filter.

Hope this has been of some help and not just a load of waffle.

Cheers

Neil

PS good luck with the gig and let us know how you get on.
Cheers

Nice one Neil - that's a great help, thanks for taking the time!!

I was thinking about splitting the tracks up a little - i figure it will help live analyze them....what warp do you play your tracks back on-Beats,complex, re-pitch??

I'll gladly let you know how it went - hey if you find your free get yourself along it's only 3/4 hr away :) (there's directions on the site)

Cheers again

No worries mate,

When I'm warping my clips I either go for tones or texture. I don't vary much between say 127 to 135 bpm so any artifacts are negligible. I'm not sure what complex warping is because my laptop has been in for repairs for 4 months and I haven't had chance to upgrade from V4 to V5.

We've got a gig 2nd December and I'm hoping to have Drums, Bass, Pad & Leads separated onto individual mono tracks to give the sound-dude a bit more scope and control. I'll let you know how that one goes.

I'll see what we can do about thw 22nd and if you fancy seeing what we do we'll be on at Hev'n & Hell in Liverpool on the 2nd Dec. Check out

Take it easy
