Merged Library copied files on disk!?

I changed the Library folder in Prefs and was asked if I wanted to merge it with the previous folder, I thought it might be useful to see my samples and Live's stuff in the same place, which it, is but now I look on my disk and I see the actual files have been copied when I thought it would be a visual reference only. Now I have to go through it and pick out/delete all the duplicated items, which are many.
Isn't this a bit of an odd thing for it to do? i.e use up a lot of memory for the sake of a navigational convenience.

Or am I missing something? (probably).
