They will be based on the Pentium Mobile ("Centrino") or a variation thereof. It is a processor specifically for laptops. It is much faster than the G4 (3-4 times?) and doesn't have a heat problem.

CPU will be the Yonah, dual-core version of Centrino. No shouldn't have a heat issue. Apparently we can expect machines (powerbooks) in early 2006. Machines are said to be 20% slimer than the actual ones.
Can't wait for Rev. B actually.!

How do you figure its 3-4 times faster than the G4?

my p4 2.8 is already twice as fast as the fastest g4.

I will say Centrinos are absolutely amazing. But what really sucks about them is the fact that you have to use Windows.

I just switched to Mac.(should get my G4 powerbook from Fed Ex in few hours)

If your in the market for a new computer right now. I would suggest going with Mac. I say this because, the Macintels are going to need some time to get the kinks out of the O.S. change, which is not good for a machine that demands high performance.

When the software(O.S., DAWs, and plug-ins) catches up with the Macintels, get one and keep your old Mac as a back up.

Why would you buy an already-obsolete hardware? I mean, in a few years, finding a replacement part for a G4 will probably be a difficult and (even more) costly task.

Unless, of course, you can grab a G4 at a reeeeally low price, and you have thought about it at least twice.

My 2 cents.
Turn up the radio. Turn up the tape machine. Look into the sunset up ahead. Roll the windows down for a better taste of the cool desert wind. Ah yes. This is what it's all about. Total control now.

Its obsolete in terms that there's already a replacement technology.

A steam train may still work, it doesn't mean it's not obsolete.

If the G4 works for you.... great.

I just hope it's enough for you. That's a lot of money spent on technology that was obsolete years ago already.

if you are referring to the 2.8ghz vs. apples 1.67 you are kidding yourself, lol. There is sooooo much more involved than that number.

and its not even double.

I am comparing the 2.
Because I have both.
And I have performed tests on Both.

My Pentium 4 2.8Ghz out performs the G4 in EVERY SINGLE instance.
Any Rabid Mac user who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.
Seriously, and I AM A RABID MAC USER.

but I still use my 1.5 Powerbook because I love macs..
they are slow (right now) but i still love them.

Needless to say the intel powerbook is on my wishlist, and I
am sure it will rock my world.

I don't need the extra horsepower of a centrino. I always have a very minimal set up when working on tracks and I resample tracks that have a lot of effects on them, once I decide I like the way sound.

My Dell is giving me a massive headache and I've always loathed working with Windows(even before I started using computers for music)

I must have bumped my friggin head when I decided to buy a Windows machine and to make even worse a Dell.

Just got my Mac today. As soon as I get it tweaked and loaded with the programs, my sig will be singing a different tune.
