Looping on the fly when using live as a dj tool?

Post by Mike Goodwin » Tue Nov 29, 2005 8:25 am

Has anyone found a plugin or a trick that allows for this? I know that the loop on and off settings in the clips can be turned on and off via midi but that is not the same as in products like traktor.

you can also:

1.Set the loop start and loop end markers on the fly
2.Record a loop in real-time to a different track
3.Use Traktor

did I miss anything?

i quite like the new loop in/out of Live5... it's exactly the feature i've wanted from tracktor/cdj's.

the workaround i used to use before this feature came in was to create 2 new tracks/channels and set thier inputs to come from the channels i wanted to loop from and record loops from the channels i had full length songs playing on.

i dont get what it is about the loop in/out that you don't like. as someone who was pretty happy when this feature arrived, i'd like to know what else it is that i'm missing out on.

setting the loop markers on the fly may work in some cases but it is not ideal for what i am trying to do with loop points most of the time. Recording loops on the fly is a cool idea and one that I am going to work on using more but again not good for creating builds. I am going to look more into the beat repeat as it seems to me that there are many different ways to use that thing that I have not fully looked into.

Why can't we just have a simple button click to loop for 1 beat/bar etc on the next global quantise? And the same for releasing the loop.

I do the same, it is the best way!!!!(for me).
I set 2 "left and right" player ch's and set the record ready. trigger clips to record and trigger again to cycle. I do this all the time when I DJ. Software Cycloops :D
Another thing, some new shit I work on is having empty clips (not use the audio) and trigger automation seq. for 2, 4, or more bars. this is very cool in a performance. To bad can not bypass/ engage plug ins with clip env. or I did not find how to yet, as the filter has an effect on the audio even when HP low or LP fully open. Yes. crap. Same for the EQ3. I will post about it for having a good sound while DJing.

Mike, you can do what you want with beat repeat.
For example, set "Interval" to a short time, like 1/16th or 1/32nd.
Set "Grid" to 1 bar.
Set "Chance" to 0%.
Set the mode to "Insert".
You probably want the offset and variation set to zero.
Now, when you click the loop on/off button, you will trigger a 1bar loop that has basically captured the last 1bar of sound and loops forever (until you stop it with another click of the button). It will sound alot like a traditional looper.

You could assign some of the controls to MIDI (particularly the loop on/off button) and have too much fun.

thanks after posting I was thinking more about that. I could also set up a controller to change the length of the loop to get some good changes happening. Thanks for the response though I will be looking into it when I get a chance.

Peace

another thin:
chop your tracks into many many pieces, starting from different times. you can create endless variations, delay changes, accelerate progressions, and, do what your tralkign about, somewhat.

if u have enough clips with different starting points, u coudl trigger one that u want to loop, and just trigger another when u dont want to loop that one anymore.
my favorites at the moment: MASSIVE. FM8. LIVE 6. Bome's Pro. KORE.

Also, try the Angstrom looper VST. Search for Angstrom in the forum and look in his signature.

Shit, that's the opposite for me, I don't know what you find good about it. I was so impatient to have it, in fact that was the 1st post i sent when I bought live 3, as a feature wish.
But when THIS appeared in L5 , it was like I'd ordered father christmas a remote-controlled car but got a doll instead and like I was told father christmas didn't exist and there would be no point in ordering the car anymore.

Angstrom looper is great (thanks BTW), but unlike a looper like found on traktor, when you release it, the song has carried on, instead of being looped, so you may release in an expected part of the track.

I use Beat Repeat too for this, then you can tweak the loop more while it plays.
