High pitched squeal coming from my Edirol UA-25 -> ???

Post by lonemale » Sun Dec 04, 2005 8:46 pm

I have a Edirol UA-25 USB soundcard running off my iBook and whenever I attach the USB cord to the laptop, and the Edirol is powered up, it emits a VERY high pitched squealing sound - similar to that of a TV when it is turned on. The noise disapates nominally when the "Direct Monitor" button is pressed (it seems to default to "on" when the soundcard is powered up), but is still there. I can hide the Edirol under my desk, and as long as it is blocked by soemthing, the sound is not audible, but if I put the Edirol on my desktop in front of me, the high pitched squealing is horrendus.

I have tried other laptops and the problem still occurs.

Though I can live with it, I would love to know whether anyone else has experienced this - and if anyone knows how fix it?

Edirol, of course, says they have no idea.

The unit has been like this since it was purchased. It happens regardless of whether my wireless in on or not. It also happens in other locations - so I do not think it's a grounding problem in my studio. Maybe it's a grounding problem within the unit though.

???

:D That's funny!

Now seriously, I changed screen resolutions on my Internet PC the other day and the soundcard started whisling like my tea water was boiling or someting!

My laptop only does one frequency though... anyway maybe try changing the screen options/resolutions/refresh rates?

If you can borrow (maybe take your laptop to the store where you bought it) the same soundcard that would help. Same problem -> it's your laptop, no problem -> it's the soundcard.

Good luck.

I have a UA-25 and haven't had that happen. It's quiet.

- haha, it would be funny if I didn't really mean it! The dog actually runs out of the room whenever the UA-25 powers on. :)

If anyone else has this happen - does pressing the "Direct Monitor" button (so that the red light goes off) help things? It makes the sound a little less audible when I do that. wierd.

I think it's the USB power supply/regulation in the keyboard. I had a Oxygen 8 that did the same thing. It's switching power supply noise.

What does "switching power supply noise" mean?

Can I fix this?

I had the same problem with my UA 25. I've since switched to a different card but still use my UA 25 in another work area. The reason it does not do it with direct monitor is because you are not communicating with your computer with that sound. I found that on my laptop the sound only came on when the laptop was plugged in. Thus, I thought it was a ground loop. I got an EBTech Hum Eliminator for $60 and it fixed the problem. Others have posted on this forum other ground loop eliminators that they got at radio shack for cheaper.
