Ableton Live: live software or remix-software?

Post by micc » Mon Apr 14, 2003 4:08 pm

I started to use Ableton Live with the purpose to have a live software. My opinion is that electronic live concerts (with laptops) are quite boring. So I tried a lot of mix using Ableton Live and classical intruments like guitars and percussions. In these experiments I realize that Ableton Live is a powerful software to produce remixes. Live performances remain always unuseful. I mean... I can record EVERY automatisation with a sequencer software like cubase/logic... why should I turn it in Ableton Live?

I'm used to do my music using cubase sx. when the song is finished, I mixdown every tracks, and I put these in Ableton Live. Now I can produce a lot of remixes of the songs using outsourced samples.

micc,

I agree that Live is a great remix tool.

The real key for me, in using Live -- live, is the MIDI control of so many of the parameters. Being able to control so many plugin and fx parameters as well as recording, looping and processing external instruments [on the fly] is simply amazing.
Just assign a midi footswitch, continuous pedal, knob, button, slider. key or any other MIDI device to control the parameters of fx or clip recording.
At this point you are [remixing] a live performance [on the fly].....

You just simply can not do this type of [on the fly] performing with a sequencer....

That is most likely why Live is labeled by Ableton as a sequencing instrument.

It turns my computer into an instrument anyway....

that and the non-linear way in which the session veiw handles audio. you can't inprovise with your loops like that in any big app. it's just so straightforward, and the graphics are clearly designed so you can see exactly what your doing in a performance environment, which can get quite hectic. the ability to record new loops in realtime while everything else is still going on, and not miss a beat. there's a whole bunch of reasons why live is amazing for live performance.

I'd just like to add that Live SAVED OUR ASSES when our S6000 (spit!) crashed in front of 6000 people.....
