Midi Time Code Full Frame messages and tempo changes

Post by bigbadotis » Fri Jan 13, 2006 3:04 am

Full Frame messages do not send Live's transport to the correct location if they tell Live to go to a point that is after any tempo changes in the arrangement.

If I have an arrangement that starts at 100 but changes to 150 bpm at measure 20, Full Frame messages will send Live's transport to the correct time value if this time occurs before measure 20, but if it occurs after measure 20 it appears to send Live to the SONG POSITION (ie measure / beat) that would be the correct location if the new tempo was constant throughout the arrangement; but since there is a tempo change, it is incorrect.

I'm guessing that Live currently derives a song position to advance to using the arrangement tempo and the value of the Full Frame Message; for example, if it receives at message to advance to 2 seconds Live thinks "OK, the current tempo is 120 bpm and the time signature is 4/4, so I should advance to beat 5". Instead it should just advance to the absolute time value that the full frame message gives (no calculation required) or take into account all tempo changes that have ocurred in the arrangement (this seems like it would be very difficult to calculate).

Please let me know if this is not clear. I could make a quick movie that would show the problem. - Charlie
