harddrive usage while recording

Post by fascam » Fri Feb 10, 2006 2:00 am

sorry if this has been covered, i searched around and couldnt find anything on it but maybe i didnt look very hard...

when live is recording it is constantly using the harddrive instead of saving up a chunk then copying it all at once. it is doing tons of small writes.

i have two cdjs hooked up to my emu1616 and have those two tracks recording. due to the insane ammount of hd usage the entire laptop becomes almost unusable. cakewalk sonar can handle recording from two asio inputs to hd without a hitch, it actually waits until it has a large chunk in ram before performing the write.

any ideas? maybe live isnt meant to be used like this?

i don't know enough about ableton's inner workings to say whether or not it is worse at this than other apps, but i'd say that expecting much performance out of a single laptop drive (which is most likely 5400 rpm?) is unrealistic.

however, you're only recording 2 tracks so i bet it's frustrating.

for audio work you should have a second drive dedicated for audio data, at least 7200rpm

are you on a mac? currently live runs generally better on pc platform, but this should change a bit with v5.2 on intel macs and perhaps even better with v.6

there is some setting about whether or not to use the OS's disk cache.. maybe fiddling with that would help?
