Pitch Bend: it's here.

Post by Dr. Zoiberg » Sat Feb 18, 2006 7:18 pm

I've played with PureData (which is a free Max/MSP clone) and made a patch that will let you use the pitch bend wheel on your keyboard to pitch-bend Live tempo.

Get it here:
http://www.anaesthetix.com/laiv_pitch_bend.zip

The patch comes with instructions for Macintosh.

PureData is also available for Windows, but I don't know how to create virtual midi ports there - but if you know, then you could use the patch.

I forgot to write a couple of things into the how-to, will add them later.

1) in PureData, press command-E to disable Edit Mode.

2) in Ableton, limit the tempo range to 15-20 bpm

Now go and try :)

This is a little utility that will let you push and pull Live tempo, like you can do with a record by touching it.
It's meant to be used by those who want to beatmatch Live to other music.

PureData is freeware, it's a sort of graphical audio/midi programming language, but the patch I've done is already working so you don't have to worry about that (but you could modify it at your will).

The only thing the patch does is to sum two midi messages, CC 8 and pitchbend from the pitchbend weel, so that you can use a fader to control tempo of Ableton Live like you do on a 1200, and use the well to push/pull the tempo.
You could use the same fader to correct, but it's easier this way.

I've read many asking for this feature before, so I thought it would have been nice to share this trick.

how is this different from simply assigning the pitchbend or mod wheel to the global tempo button?

I cannot get myself to grasp what is ment with

1. turn on the IAC driver in the Audio/Midi configuration utility...

Where, in Live or PureData?

it's in the audio / midi setup utility within Mac OSX, you have to enable the IAC driver there... that's where you configured all your other midi connex as well, i guess!?

Can you assign two controllers to the same function in Live?
Can you assign them so that one modifies the value sent by the other?

You just need to find a way to create a virtual midi port, so that you can use that to send midi from PD to Ableton Live.
PD is cross pltaform :-)
