crossfading in the arrangement

one thread in the wishlist was asking for a crossfade function in the arrangement view to save time messing around with envelopes -

anyways - one way i found to crossfade in the arrangement view is to have two clips in the session view that are each assigned to the crossfader - arm both tracks for recording and then record into the arrangement view whilst you are controlling the desired cross fade in the session view. you then have the two tracks crossfading

if you are wanting to crossfade two clips from the same track then you have to place them into two separate tracks to begin with for the purpose of crossfade recording and then record/resample them into a third track and place the recorded crossfade mix back into the original track - hope im making sense!!

only problem i found is that recording into the arrangement this way records over all other tracks in the arrangement view- even if the track activator switches are switched off and even if the other tracks are not armed for recording!!!

so i had to open a new set - import the two tracks i wanted to crossfade/record and then saved it so i could use it in the original set......

can someone tell me why the other tracks are being recorded over despite the track activator switch and record buttons being off??

I'm making fitness CDs for my partner's kick boxing class in a similar fashion.

I just use three tracks in arrangement view, alternating songs in the first two tracks, then dropping in percussion bridges to transition between tracks in the third track. I drag them left and right and draw volume automation fade-ins and -outs until each sounds right, then render all three tracks. I'm not sure why you would need to record rather than render. Exponential or Bézier curves would be nice, but you get basically the same effect with multiple straight-line segments.

She has a starting and ending tempo, so I just draw one long automated tempo from start to finish, like 120 to 140. The tempo creeps up so gradually that you don't even notice it... until people start dropping from exhaustion at the end!

yes rendering would be good idea - im still finding my away around ableton and music software in general - so lots of trial and error

any ideas though why when recording into an arrangement that any existing tracks are recorded over despite track activator switches and record buttons being disabled?

clips playing in session view will be recorded into arrangement regardless of track rec enabling

the two clips that i want to record from the sessioninto the arrangement for this crossfade experiment were recorded in successfully - but there were no other clips playing in the session view - just the 2 i want to go into the arrangement

however a vertical line, which indicates where abouts you are in the arrangement view, sweeps along the entire length of the screen - erasing audio in all other tracks - like i said no other clips in the session view wereplaying and all other track activator and record enabling buttons were switched off

The reason the other tracks are disappearing is because they aren't playing in the session view... If you record into the arrangement, the state of the session will update/replace that of the arrangement. If you have stopped the clips in the session, you are recording "silence" - no clip playing back. A tracks record enable state does not alter the recording of clips from the session into the arrange - only the creation of clips in the session or arrange.

To see what I mean, press play on the set with the clips playing back from the arrange. Hit the global record, then begin stopping clips - you'll see them stop in the arrangement overview.

Solution - record the crossfade experiment with the other clips playing. You could perhaps create a new set and open the old set in the browser and drag those two tracks into the new set. Or, solo the tracks you are crossfading together, then delete the resulting solo automation after you're done recording the crossfade.
