Waves?
Waves?
I think Waves plugs are now even more unstable in Live. Is this so for everyone? I emailed Waves tech support lobbying for Live to be one of their supported apps and got a polite response from them. What more is there to do? I have a fair investment in Waves plug-ins and I really like most of them but since switching to Live for composition work I am disapointed at how unstable the combination is.
I am using 5.03 through the concert season (till May for me) so I wonder if the 5.whatever beta works better for Waves pluigs?
Thanks for listening.
Here are my hardware/software versions:

hey mate
hey ! Very true my friend... I stopped using WAVES plugins on Live 4 bcz they were quite unstable. I retried it, now with Live 5, and my impression was that they were much more unstable than before! They even completely freezed my system! Haven't tried on Live 5.2, I've read it comes with new support for VST 2.4, maybe it helps?

I have actually had a lot better luck with waves plugs using audio unit versions using the same exact computer(15" 1.67, G4 10.4.3 2 gig ram) but with 5.2. I can't say that it has been flawless. I have had a few instances when I use the sequencer controls like start, stop etc....either by pushing the space bar or clicking the buttons on screen resulting in a crash but other than that I have been able to mix with them and record with them without any functional errors or problems with the sound like i was getting before.
I would like to see the stability get a little tighter but all in all I have seemed to see a big improvement. I couldn't even drag and drop a waves plug without it crashing my system in Live 5.x.
It would be great if Waves started supporting Live as one of the sequencers. I would be very tempted to get an APA host that would pretty much future proof my system.
What did Waves say in the nice e-mail, Icarus?

waves is a total and complete scam.
WUP ASSED
every email i have ever sent them has been replied via the same exact form email
explaining how to install and authorize the plug in.
DUH I KNOW HOW TO DO.
heh
yah i am bitter
their plug ins aren't amazing.
they are the microsoft of the plug in world.
just like digidesign.
I love Waves plug-in, they ARE amazing. But their sales and support people do really suck. They better start treating us a bit better becuase there are a lot of great sounding plug-ins these days... Sonalksis, URS, UA, Wavearts, McDsp, etc...
In fact, they are more like the Digidesign of Plug-ins... all the big budget studios buy their stuff no matter what... even if their support in 3rd rate.
BTW, I did a mix comparison test to compare Wavearts and Waves, just for my own sanity. I used all Wavearts, then on the same track all Waves Renaissance. Waves sounded significantly better... It wasn't exactly scientific, but the Waves mix was punchier, tighter, and cleaner.

perhaps not quite as powerful as the waves, but they work flawlessly and sound pretty decent. AND THEY ARE FREE!
altho' i wish ableton would put side chain in their own effects, but i guess that's for another forum...

Stepping back from the 'which sounds better' business...
The Waves plugins have, in my limited experience, often been unreliable in several hosts.
Using them in Logic 5.5.1 was a fiasco. Sure, they don't officially support Logic, just as they don't support Live, but why - given the VST standard - should 'supporting' a certain DAW even be an issue?! Either you're making a VST effect to the standard or you're not.
Waves insists on using its strange 'shell' dll that seems to be the root of most problems.
I appreciate there may be problems with how Live implements the VST standard too, but I get the impression that Waves doesn't exactly make things easy for DAW programmers...

The waves plugins are nice... They are really good for getting mixes of lots of different things to sit well with each other. good compressors are naturally going to use a lot of cpu.
I don't think they have the 'character' or 'warmth' or 'color' of the UAD plugins or the Sonalksis compressor.
I dunno, it's like judging wine I guess... Some work for fish, other for chicken, others for a stroll in the park with the girlfriend... others for just getting wasted.
The Waves Trance Experience DVD is worth checking out. Lots of good ideas no matter what genre you feel drawn towards.

waves on my pc system works like a dream and i dont think ive ever crashed with them in either 4 or 5. there are lots of plugs that have probs with live perhaps they only really test with cubase/pro tools/logic and then be done with it which is a bit of a joke. the best thing about industry standards is that every companys got a different one.
ren eq and comp are about as good as you get for a traditional sound at least.

yeah, the waves vsts work for shit on my machine. about 75% of the au plugins work, which is rather frustrating. i think they sound great, but it is definitely a little ridiculous that waves has to 'support' a daw for the plugins to work properly. hell, you can download freeware plugins that are more reliable than waves, and i paid $500 (on super duper discount sale) for the waves gold bundle.
i'd also like to mention that i paid $10 for shipping for the dvd of ir-l presets (why they aren't included in the installed i have no f'ing clue, the installer is a dvd with a single 70 meg file on it), expecting to get a box with a bubble-wrapped dvd case on the inside. it got here last night, it was an un-padded envelope with a loose dvd inside. sweet, thanks! have fun with my 10 bucks, you assholes!
