Midi Out Ok, Midi In NO WAY!!

Post by Vazkor » Sat Apr 22, 2006 1:37 am

Hi to everyone,
I just connected my Roland TD-6 to my Sounblaster Audigy with a Midi / Game adapter and an additional midi cable but the small Midi In light remains off all the time and I can't hear nothing.
In order to test the cable and adapter I switched to Midi Out drawing a small pattern in Ableton ( 5.0 ) and sending it to my TD-6 ... I CAN hear it with the device's headphones so it's not an hardware problem.

I'm pretty confused now ... I read the manual, tried to check preferences, Ableton doesn't seem to receive midi data.

Please help :(

trying to get clear -

the audigy has a normal midi plug for an output, and some kind of game port to which you are attaching an adapter, and using that for midi in

?

or no, the adapter is for both input and output, right?

Exactly.

My Audigy Player has no "real" midi port, only an obsolete game/joystick port ... I plugged an adapter to connect my TD-6.

So out and in share the same adapter, I don't think the problem resides there.

I double checked if my Roland has some option to turn on to send midi data but it doesn't, I should simply connect it ... strange eh?

maybe try out midiOx to help see what's going on with your midi signals.

also i would have a good look around device manager to make sure there aren't any settings in there which are having an effect. and any special driver programs for your soundcard...

i've been wanting to get one of those adapters because i have a game port on my mobo and thought it would be a cheap way to get another midi interface. your situation is discouraging! also they're not very common anymore

Could you please briefly explain what kind of test should I take with that program? Meanwhile I'm trying to figure it out by myself, with no great results for now ...

well, it will give you a readout of the midi activity, which might help to determine if in fact it's a hardware problem, rather than some setting in live.

or not ;)

can you see the midi input and output in ableton's preferences? and how do you have them set up (track, remote, sync)

Yeeeah!
It works :)

While I was taking a shower I wondered ... doesn't my motherboard came with a built-in audio hardware?
I checked the manual and yes, there's a game port right behind my Audigy ... I plugged my TD-6 back there and it works like a charm :)

The Audigy midi in doesn't work or so it seems ... thanks A LOT to longjohns for helping me out finding a solution :)

They're pretty common around here, about 20 euro at a local music store ... if you can't manage to get one you could get an usb / midi interface for about 40 euro.
