Loosing contact to USB midi controller / trigger finger

Post by PeterBoggild » Sun Apr 23, 2006 6:17 pm

I am heavily, heavily dependent on my triggerfinger for controlling many parts of live. We just played a gig where I lost the connection in the middle of a track, which caused everything to boom on - i had 8 tracks of the mixer locked to the pressure sensitive pads. 5 minutes break - .. . it is very discomforting, and using Live as a Live software program, seems to be seriously impeded by this behaviour.

It has been adressed before, but I have not seen a fix.

1) is there any way to set up live, or to set up XP so that this does not happen

2) if it does, is there any way to regain contact to the controller without having to reboot live or the computer?

This seems to me a really fundamental problem for Ableton, since everyone using USB controllers or control surfaces may experience that critical "loss of connection" sending the one important job / showcase down the drain.

Please help me - we are to play again soon, and I am very worried about going on stage with such a timebomb.

I doubt that the problem is on Ableton's part. I'd rather suspect power drops on the USB port. That has happened to me with some USB hardware. Solved by getting a powered hub.

i don't know if it helps or not, but there is a setting for each usb port on your machine, in device manager, where you can uncheck "let the computer turn off power to this port to save energy" or something like that.

Perhaps a solution

Inspired by one of the posts here, or elsewhere (i cannot remember), i tried to switch off the triggerfinger (pulling out the cable) and back, and then switching off all four "ON" MIDI buttons in Lives preferences off, and switching them back on. Then live can "hear" the midi again.

I would like to know if this works for you...

Make sure ALL power saving Preferences are turn off, maybe something is affecting the port your using.

Also as the previous poster said, get a powered usb hub,They make a HUGE difference!

i will try with the HUB, because unplugging and check the preferences after, when i play the liveact on the stage, is maybe not the best solution .....;-)
will let you know asap.....
